NT BAND

In the spirit of other collaborative efforts here on NT (such as NTPE etc) I'd like to propose a new idea: NT BAND.

I know there are quite a few designer/musicians who frequent this place. It would be great if all of us musos could get together to create a piece or pieces of music, collaboratively over the net. We would never need to meet in person, it could be done by just exchanging files (a common format eg garageband or logic) or could even be just mp3s going back and forth, gradually building up parts. People into djing could then even do remixes of the tracks etc. We'd probably need one person to then gather all the individual track layers and mix them properly at the end anyway.

I think this could be really cool. But first we need a role call of who plays which instruments. And then suggestions for songs to play. Could be a cover at first to keep things simple and make sure everyone is happy. Once people have signed up in this thread I'll start a band email group to organise details.

Who's in?

Name my album...

I've been working on my first proper solo album for over a year now in my spare time. I've finally managed to edit it down to about 14 tracks that I like. It's mainly bluesy soul music (think the Meters, donny hathaway) but there is also a significant amount of acoustic music.

It starts off funky and then mellows out basically.
I'm planning to get it onto itunes music store and a few other online places about mid june and then put a band together with some friends to gig it around london.

Anyway ideas for names would be appreciated, and yes I realise I'll get a bunch of hilarious crap too but that's fine, I need amusing today.

QBN Spotify playlist

Inspired by the 'special songs' thread I've decided to start the first QBN spotify collaborative playlist.
We can all add music and share with eachother, hopefully a great way to discover new music.

Just click on this link and it will be automatically added to your playlists, then add whatever you want. But let's try and avoid just dumping whole albums in there – just your favourite tracks.

http://open.spotify.com/user/jos…

I've put a few in there already, I thought was fitting to kick things off with Jeff Beck's cover of A Day in the Life since the opening lyrics are "I read the NEWS TODAY oh boy" :o)

If you don't have a spotify account, then sign up here, it seems to be open to everyone from this link:
https://www.spotify.com/en/get-s…

Enjoy!

ZUNE HD

Haha, nice piece of product design but once again, MS seems to keep flogging this dead horse of a product, I suppose they have no choice.

I love how the word marketplace doesn't fit on the screen in this visual. Sums it all up really doesn't it?

B.O.

A new guy has just started at my work, he sits next to me and has really bad body odour. I'm having to sit with my desk fan on pointing in his direction just to clear the air so I can breathe. Surely there's some office regulations about this kind of thing. What should I do?

RIP McQueen

Bit a of shock. Always had great design and branding. I always respected him as a designer, coming from a proper saville-row apprenticeship then working his way up via art school etc.

nice logo too

Smokers

How many people smoke where you work? I don't smoke so I resent that they get breaks all the time to go outside and kill themselves. It doesn't make any sense from a business point of view to let them waste studio time for what will inevitably result in a decreased workforce (through death!).

So, I did some maths to calm myself:

• there are 365 days a year
• in england there are 8 bank holidays
• there are roughly 104 days of weekend a year
• we get 25 days of paid holiday

Therefore we work: 365-8-104-25= 228 days

The average smoker in my studio has maybe 4 breaks a day of about 10 minutes. So that's 40 minutes a day. Which over a year is 9120 minutes, which is 152 hours which works out as over 6 days of smoking time a year!

6 DAYS!

I want 6 extra days of holiday for not smoking.

Although, maybe I already use that time on QBN, who knows. Just thought I'd put this info out there

girlfriend to just friend – possible?

Has anyone ever managed to break up with a girlfriend and still stay friends. Is this really possible or are Seinfeld's Jerry and Elaine the only ones to ever manage it?

rebranding Playboy

A great theoretical project. The thinking, the positioning, the design are all great.
This guy deserves to go places, best work I've seen in a while

don't call me sweetie

A project manager, calls me 'sweetie' when getting defensive. It's the most patronising thing I've ever experienced. Every time she does it I get that much closer to being fine with hitting a woman.

Why do project managers feel it's ok to patronise designers. I did a specific degree to become a designer, all they did was not know what job to go into, so they got a job 'in media' and ended up talking on the phone to other project managers all day.

This is the kind of thing that normally gets posted so I thought I'd be the one to do it. I think it looks pretty sweet, I like that it still has the feel of a pencil sketch despite being the size of a building.

How far away are we from a Wall-E reality now?

it's just kind of depressing that we've let it get to this point. This latest generation of kids is the first to have a life expectancy which is lower than their parents.

Stewart Lee vehicle tonight

Tonight, one of my favourite stand-up comedians of all time has a tv show starting on BBC2
10pm.

So in honor of someone actually good being allowed on to tv for once, I thought I'd share some clips of his standup:

I'm off to barcelona at the weekend.
Anyone from there or who's been recently who can recommend anything that's happening at the moment, exhibitions, events etc.
I've been once before so know where all the sights/museums are. looking for some things to see off the beaten track.

Also hoping to avoid swine flu too!

David Cameron Poster

Some of you UKers will have seen the new Conservative party poster which is just insane in the amount of airbrushing of david cameron's face:

So I've created a template with editable text since I thought it was ripe for playing with or a PSB. http://www.mediafire.com/?gzzzzm…

Best typography biscuits

I've noticed a lot of typography on food particularly biscuits here in the UK. I never thought about it but the concept of putting text on food is pretty odd.
I have to cater for a tea and I want all the food to have type on it

So far I've got:
Rich Tea
Digestive
Bourbon
Nice biscuits
Custard Creams
Morning coffee
Malted Milk
Kit Kat
Club
Choco leibniz
Oreo
Love hearts
M&MS
Skittles
yorkie

anyone think of any other good examples?
