Is Netlify a good choice for hosting a personal site?

    Or github?

    I have my own html/css

Maybe; If you like Netlify's build setup and features then I'd suggest it over Github. Netlify is hosting with a pretty unique feature set and Github is all about development repos with hosting bolted-on.

For years I used Netlify's free tier for testing a bunch of things like 11ty forks, while also running a handful of static hand-coded sites. It was all fine, but I moved my stuff elsewhere when Netlify raised their prices and started to downplay/reduce the free tier (which is for "non-commercial" things BTW).

Like most things it depends on what you need for whatever you're building; Repos or a more hosting-centric model? I'd at least give Netlify a test drive and check it out.

    • I'd take a steaming pile of poop with maggots on it over Github. I can't believe it still exists.CyBrainX
    • Github has been a laughing stock on social media multiple times lately for good reason; Ironically they're one of my motion design/video editing clients too.evilpeacock

I use Netlify to host for my blog for free, it's a static site generated by Hugo. I've also been able to direct a domain to it and use https all on the free account. Granted I haven't touched it in a year and half so things might have changed but I would recommend it if nothing has changed.

    • That said my blog currently seems to be down. So maybe not all is well. I shall have to investigate now.skinny_puppy
    • Could be a Hugo security issue or patch that went sideways; I still get lots of warnings from my Netlify experiments on those.evilpeacock
