I recently ran out of what I'd been wearing for a while, and I'm going back to DS & Durga. Got some samples, I've had Burning Barbershop before and it's the most "me" cologne I've found, it lasts all day as well. Really liking Debaser and also Radio Bombay.
Radio Bombay - it's got this one particular aspect of it that smells like old vinyl, canvas, and leather, a little bit like the inside of an old military vehicle, which is a key nostalgic scent from my childhood, because I loved military stuff, and we had this huge outdoor museum in Texas full of tanks, landing craft, old boats, etc.
Anytime I am around a smell like that it just makes me so happy and reminds me of childhood.
Olfactory memories are interesting to me. We can take photos, record audio and video, we can get recipes to recreate food we've had, we can save food and take it home to finish later, we can write notes about something and make mental memories, but we can't capture and keep smells. I've always been intrigued by that.
There's another smell I remember from childhood, At the museum of science and industry in Ft. Worth, TX, there's a downstairs hallway that goes from an old-west facade of a blacksmith, a baker, and other things, all this cedar wood exterior and windows you can look into. That hallway turns into the a hallway through the biology area, where there are some reptiles in the windows, classrooms, etc. There's this smell I remember so distinctly, and I've only ever encountered it in a couple museums since. But when I do, good grief I just feel like I'm eight years old and it makes me so happy.
Anyhow... check out DS & Durga.
