Just come back from the Cyclades in Greece. Sifnos / Serifos / Folegandros. The trick with greece is to steer towards the places that have no airports, which removes 90% of basic travelers. Good food, great beers, amazing wines, hot as hell, and there's a sense that you're in a land that's been civilized for way more millennia than the rest of the world.
- Sounds like everything I'd want. Thanks for the tip. I've never been there despite all my grandparents and half my GF's having come from Greece.CyBrainX

Paris.
I've never been anywhere more beautiful. Just seeing the Louvre and the D'Orsay is worth the trip alone. I went with a friend and visited a student he knew who was fluent in French and told us everywhere to go and helped translate for us. It was an ideal situation. Don't miss Versailles, close to Paris and don't miss Père Lachaise cemetary.

Lake Garda.
Just returned from week with my wife and two sons. The place is extraordinary.
Food is out of this world - fresh pasta, fish, ALLL the gelato, fresh pizza, cheeses, salads, wines, olive oils.
Scenery is breathtaking - the dolomites, lake views, beautiful houses and architecture.
People are lovely - a little effort to try a word or two in Italian goes a long way We had some fun conversations that were a heady mixture of English, French, Italian and German.
Activities - Pre breakfast Swim, Kite surfing in the morning, climbing in the afternoon, cycling to a place to watch the sun go down.- did you go to that surrealist poet's bonkers house with the battleship embedded into the hillside?hans_glib
- We were on the other side of the lake in Garda. It was on the list but got relegated to 'next time'. Found ourselves in Riva in the north of the lake instead.Morning_star

Anywhere in southern Europe, only 20 km away from the most touristic areas ;)
