What do you recommend?

Have a Casper and it's ok. Thinking of checking out Purple.

I think firm is good. I just bought a super firm one for my family and I am jealous. You really gotta go lay on that shit yourself and pick. Fuck the brands fuck the pillow tops and soft shit... but that's me. I like it hard. Stay hard motherfucker!!!!
Spend a day driving around and lay on it until the cash falls out of your pocket.

I sleep on a Tempurpedic. The wife paid about $3k for it (more I think). I still wake up with a sore back and numb legs. Feels a bit rigid.
Just bought a cheap (sub $1k) memory foam one from Costco. Haven't slept in it but it feels amazing. You sink into it but still feel supported.
I think this says more about the type of mattress I need than the quality or price. All I know is, spending $3k on a mattress is fucking bananas.

Don’t buy the internet mattresses in a box. Despite what those companies say, they’re not at all like a good mattress.
We have one and it’s fine but not good. Never again.
- Agreed 1,000%. EVERYONE I know who bought a box mattress (casper, purple, etc) has said that after 3-4 years they are basically SHIT.monospaced
- We noticed in the few months that it’s just not comfortable or supportive. Designed by amateursnb

Was just at a mattress store to pick up something for my toddler who's getting his first twin size. Walking through the store I didn't see a single queen size that was going for less than $3,000 on display. When I asked about something cheaper, they pointed to the cheap area in the back corner and reinforced the idea that a good mattress is a good investment.
I bought a $3K mattress about 10 years ago (big discount on top of that with the sale), and I'm glad I did. A mattress is not an area you should go budget on, considering you spend 1/3 of your life on it.
Thing is, there is a difference between the $1K and $3K mattress, and while it might not be apparent at first, it will be after a few years. No, it's not bananas. What's bananas is buying a half price $1K mattress, convincing yourself it's good, and then suffering on that piece of crap five years later.

I just bought a Purple 4, cost about 3k for a queen. I'll post when it arrives this week.

I haven’t done this personally but this sounds about right. There was/is a website sleeplikethedead. The prevailing wisdom there seemed to be that you should get a moderately cheap spring mattress. Not the pocket coil ones as the pockets can tear out, but the old timey ones where the springs are sort of woven into a frame. It’s called a Bailey mattress or something. Anyways. You get that, then drop a decent amount on a really good mattress topper. Maybe memory foam or latex or something that might cost you $1,000. The combination of the two makes for an excellent bed, with all the benefits of a high end pillow top, but you can actually flip and rotate the springs, and replace the spring base as it wears out, but keep the good pillow top long term. This also lets you get a firm and your partner to get a softer mattress, or whatever you want to do. Anyways, it sounds like just the ticket. I would like to do that for our next bed.

Serta iComfort Hybrid with Cooling Upgrade is the way to go. I've had mine for like 8 or 9 years now and still absolutely love it

Went to a mattress store today and the one I liked was $1400. He said it was on sale but it didn't even have a label on it. I have no idea if I could buy it for $500 elsewhere.
