I haven’t done this personally but this sounds about right. There was/is a website sleeplikethedead. The prevailing wisdom there seemed to be that you should get a moderately cheap spring mattress. Not the pocket coil ones as the pockets can tear out, but the old timey ones where the springs are sort of woven into a frame. It’s called a Bailey mattress or something. Anyways. You get that, then drop a decent amount on a really good mattress topper. Maybe memory foam or latex or something that might cost you $1,000. The combination of the two makes for an excellent bed, with all the benefits of a high end pillow top, but you can actually flip and rotate the springs, and replace the spring base as it wears out, but keep the good pillow top long term. This also lets you get a firm and your partner to get a softer mattress, or whatever you want to do. Anyways, it sounds like just the ticket. I would like to do that for our next bed.
