Anyone been? The wife and I have some miles to burn and are thinking about going in mid-late November. Thinking 10 days or so.

We would love to see as much as possible but I know that's pretty tough there. But we like to move around. Probably 2 days in 1 city would be enough. So thinking 5 or 6 cities? Also open to day trips using 1 major city as a hub.

Open to suggestions of where to go, what to see, where to eat, sleep, etc. Any advice you have I'll take it!

What's your bag - architecture, history, food, contemporary culture, sun-bathing (not so much in November!)?

Will you be driving, railing or..?

Personally, I love Bologna and the small hill-top towns like Urbino in Marche region. Bologna's possibly a good-ish hub as it's fairly 'central' with good rail connections to Milan and Turin up North and the adriatic coast and Rome to the South.

I've not been as far South as Rome yet, and am possibly* heading to Napoli next week, which could be 'fun'.

    .

    * unless my partner and I argue so much that we split up over it, which appears to be the general direction (she's there now, expecting me to drop everything and go tomorrow for three nights, which is a little.. well, inconvenient to me right now. ho hum).

    • I agree with the Marche, we spent three weeks near Fano (on the Adriatic) this past June and loved every minute.wordssssss
    • Mrs Detritus sounds a bit volatile!Continuity
    • She's Italian and I'm sorta Scottish, it's all a bit volatile...detritus
    • TBF there's been some miscommunication - I thought I was going next week, so was planning for that. She thinks otherwise :(detritus
    • She's an Italian woman, so if you value having your life: she's right. Automatically.Continuity

We're into a little history, a little architecture, a lot of food and culture.

Right now we'll probably rail to cover more ground quicker, but not opposed to driving.

I'll look into Bologna and Urbino/Marche. Cinque Terre looks great but not sure it'll be worth the trek in November?

    • We also went to Cinque Terre. Stayed outside of Levanto. Pretty great exploring around Cinque Terre but not actually dealing with all the people.wordssssss
    • I've bee really impressed with Italian rail. Bologna great for history, old architecture and food :) I did a day (lol) in Milan - very impressive..detritus
    • ..but beware the posh shopping quarter if you're GF is a spender! Most pics I took in Milan were of retail displays, which they do REALLY welldetritus
    • (was looking for ideas to steal. I don't get off on commercial retail stuff.;)detritus
    • We'll definitely try to do Cinque and Bologna sounds great. Sounds like the wife will definitely like Milan so may have to plan for that too.CincodeMayo
