For interiors...
Trying to mock up event spaces...
Anything out there?

how advanced do you want to take this?
basics - google one, cinema4d.
opensource - blender (have fun!)
advanced - maya, houdini- "have fun!" said deeply sarcastically?detritus
- yep! Though its great to have an open source 3d thing out there .... its just not like anything else.mugwart
- when you say "google one," do you mean look it up, or are you referencing a specific product?monospaced
- the specific one! I'm deep in hex code and my brain is dead - not being rude!mugwart
- I know you weren't being rude. I'm genuinely curious. link?monospaced

I thinkuan - ^ I think this was the 'google one'!mugwart
- Blender is easy to get use if you've had any experience with 3d. However, it's not made to input meters or feet.section_014
- It's just arbitrary units use in blender. In other words, it doesn't do any CAD like drawing.section_014
- I have been teaching myself Blender, and I immediately noticed that section. I can't just type in my exact measurements like SketchUp, that i can tellmonospaced

oh and ligthwave was 'easier' when I was just starting offf... not to sure these days 2d is more my thing
- monospaced1
We use SketchUp for exactly this, pretty much every single day on our team, but if you're looking for control over lighting, it might not be enough for you.

for basic space mockup, I also suggest Sketchup. Everything else has a steep learning curve that only make sense if you want to dig deeper into 3D.
- I train people in SketchUp, and I can say it's the easiest software I've had to learn in a long time.monospaced

how about the 3D in photoshop...not using it and fearing it's a mess...but might be ok and easy for your task
- I pondered this earlier when the thread first popped up - PS *might* be useful in manually applying textures to Sketchups, but in and of itself? *horror*detritus
- The 3D in Photoshop is an absolute mess and should be avoided like tits on a wolf - bizarre and no redeeming functionality whatsoever.face_melter
- yeah, I 'discovered' (as in didn't ignore for once) the Postcard Layer function the other day. WHY does that exist like that?
Fucking half-assed shit.detritus - Reason #3543543 I loathe Adobe — completely superfluous, redundant features added invisibly to UI-oblivious contexts. Thanks. My money well spent?detritus
- Oh, it's garbage. Even the 3D thing they demoed recently, while powerful, still screams 'WE DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE DOING!'face_melter

Didn't Sketchup used to be around $300, before and whilst it was owned by Google? Now it's nearly $700?
- The really old pre-Google one was great for sneakily converting between file formats, if i remember right.detritus
- The company who bought SketchUp piled a load of money into proper development, something Google never did.face_melter
- I thought it was free. don't know where I got that idea -- did it used to be free?Gnash
- There's a free version which is useful but fairly neutered, especially where file loading/exporting's concerned. Just uses .skp files, I think?detritus
- it works with a wide array of file types, including CADmonospaced
- oh, yeah, the free version ... you're right.monospaced

As folk have already said - SketchUp is your best bet - built from the ground up to be used for space planning it is a much better program now than it ever was - still has problems with complex and heavy geometry - but get that and a decent physical renderer and you have a worthwhile solution.

Blender is a great tool and really isn't THAT different if you've used 3d before. It just has some navigation quirks (eg. right click to select, Z axis up).
After a brief learning curve, it's really powerful, and has a great community. Lots of tutorials on youtube to get you started.
I've heard good things about Autodesk Fusion 360 for more hard-surface/product design.
- This. Blender is really awesome. I hadn't touched 3d for 10 years, and got up to speed quickly.section_014
- I finished this series in a day, and I can honestly say it got me going in Blender! Really powerful stuff!monospaced
- Also, he has you change the right/left click issue right away in this tutorial series :)monospaced
- I haven't done any 3d so I recently started watching blender tutorials on youtube. it's really easy tbh.dorf
- I'm all for open source - i really hope blender continues as it has beenmugwart

Thanks people - will check this out

For interiors and architecture renderings/3D (this is the bulk of my company's work):
SketchUp (I'd go with this, you can't go wrong) - simple for non 3D folk, ubiquitous
3DSMax - industry standard but far more cumbersome and time consuming (billions of things you'll never need)
Both of these have millions of resources like 3D furniture. SU has a good free library.

Oh forgot - there is modo

I'm trying to make accurate faces into Cinema4d, but I'm on a mac.
Anyone knows of something like this but for osx?
- Seems really good. Haven't seen a Mac App like that yet.PhanLo
- boot up linux ;-P
Are you talking fast modeling or plugin?
Can do this by "hand" in any 3d app. Vetrex by vetrex!mugwart - both, fast and plugin (or standalone).
Yes, you can do all modeling from scratch, I was hoping to optimize that stepMiguex - the web:

makes you a base conversion foto->objuan - you can refine the obj in c4d to add more details or change thingsuan

Fusion 123 is another player in this space that I've been doing tests with. It's more CAD/Sketchup like, because you use actual measurements.
I've used Blender and 3D Studio Max at a very amateur level, and found Fusion 123 pretty easy to come to grips with.
- I've heard decent things about that. And I agree, Blender is anything but basic. It's one of the most complex, sprawling pieces of software I've ever encounteremonospaced
- Is there a Blender thread on here? There seems to be loads of good uses for it, but I couldn't see a thread for it.PhanLo
- There should be.monospaced
- Now there is:
