Really sorry for those who work on the post-prod of this series that's the only thing what isn't lame as fuck.
Last two episodes completely wiped out that sparkle of excitement I had for this show.

    I blame her:

    • ... and she's one of the least annoying on the show.Continuity
    • Still. She's not *quite* as annoying as, say ...

      KAI FUCKING WINN.
      Continuity
    • Tilly is by far the most annoying character on the show but still better than most of the characters from DS9.CyBrainX
    • In no particular order Kai Winn, Jake Sisko, Nog, Dukat, the entire cast of Enterprise, the entire cast of Discovery, and Harry Fucking Kim are the ones I findContinuity
    • ... the most annoying. Even more than poor Wesley Crusher.Continuity
    • I also forgot to add Rom to that list. Fucking Rom.Continuity
    • I have to take exception with anyone being more annoying than Wesley. And you didn't even mention Neelix. I liked Jake even though he didn't serve much purpose.CyBrainX
    • The Ferengi were the worst species in the canon and most of the DS9 cast made that the worst series. The writing didn't help either.CyBrainX
    • During its first run, I wasn't not at all a fan of DS9, bar a few episodes like. I hated all the poltics, the Bajoran religion and all the war stuff.Continuity
    • Having recently finished binge-watching it again, I mind it far less than I did on its original run. There are some actually interesting stories on it.Continuity
    • Also, DS9 gave us this brilliant little scene between Damar and Weyoun 8 (starting at 2:35): https://www.youtube.…Continuity
    • Damar was a good character. Speaking of actors and many characters, Jeffery Combs played 3: Brunt, Weyoun and Shran.CyBrainX
    • 5! Weyoun, Brunt, Penk, Krem, Shransted

What I don't get is that Sarus character isn't such a careless fuckface right, he is the one who is always overreacting right?
So why not spend the discovery part of the episode investigating the murder and the rest can remain on that other ship?
tilly should use that spore emanation flux or "some shit" to reconstruct the homicide, because as we know lieutenant theotherginger can see through time (or something like that) and in startrek you can suck out memories from heads and not just one way. and maybe this way it will make more sense how the fakk discovery's crew knew the secret of ash
    job done, go home.

It's all just retcon wankery. I'm sure season 2 will see substantial ratings/subscriber drop off. I planned to stick through season one, but not sure I can make it. And I don't have to even subscribe to watch, it's just on TV here in Canada.

    • It's on cable, not OTA TV, so you have subscribed.i_monk
    • Not to a shite streaming service to watch a single show... so yeah, anyway.ETM

Ok, I quite like this again.

The two big twists of the show so far were spoiled months ago in online forums, so I think I'm going to stop reading anything and try to enjoy what's left.

    • i literally just this past few days finished the latter half of the last series of GoT. If you want to avoid spoilers, it is possible.
      Possible, not enjoyable.

    • I am figuratively incensed by how easily the wall came down in the end.

Is there any problem that the new Star Trek can’t solve by kicking, punching, stabbing and shooting the fuck out of it?

I’m just about over the fact that the ridiculous levels of technology they have in an era before Kirk, it’s still bullshit, but whatever. But the general tone of the show is just crap.

There was a point tonight where certain characters needed a plan to get out of a situation and that plan was kick-punch-shoot-stab.

I’ve got this far so I’ll probably see out this season, but if they don’t do something interesting I don’t think I’ll bother with the second.

    • The franchise has never paid much attention to tech continuity. How many problems are solved by tech that's never mentioned again?i_monk
    • Yeah, I still think it’s been a bizare decision to make this before the original series, but it’s the general violent action tone it’s taken that has bothered..Wolfboy
    • ...me more. The whole thing is just so blunt.Wolfboy
    • This turd of a show is shockingly violent, actually, and it's a real put-off.Continuity
    • Shockingly violent? Really?CyBrainX
    • In the context of Star Trek? Absolutely. And needlessly gruesome, too.Continuity

  • CyBrainX1

I still think the Next Generation was the best series and by far but Disocvery has gotten off to the best start of any of them. Not that any of them had stellar first seasons. I like that the series is set 10 years before the original series. It makes you wonder what other familiar characters and races we'll see. I have to admit just having Sarek was worth putting the show in this era. I'm hoping they explain the reason for some of the way advanced tech we're seeing. Mostly the spore drive. Other than that, it's mostly better CGI than 60s paper mache I think people are reacting to. Also, I like the plot twist with the evil captain.

This week on 'Slow-Motion Car Crash Masquerading as Star Trek':

    • The Earth's solar system is woefully under-defended. One single Klingon house can take out a starbase just outside the solar system with barely any starships (three? really?) to stop them. And, apparently, with no reinforcements from Earth coming. One can only be thankful Starfleet had learnt its lesson by the time Wolf 359 happened, even if they were on the losing side. At least they had ships to throw at the Borg.

    • Miraculously, the Klingon Houses seem to be able to not bother trying to take each other out for control of the Empire, and have it together long enough to take out the Federation instead. Because, well, civil war sucks, and would be a complete waste of resources, and would mean they wouldn't be able to mount a cohesive strategy against Starfleet, am I right? Oh wait, they're not actually united, you say ...

    • Turns out terraforming takes no time at all, and Federation starships seem readily equipped for the job (how convenient!). Makes one wonder why there was so much hype around the Genesis Project, 28 years later. Clearly, Dr Carol Marcus & Co were rank amateurs.

    • SMG still can't act.

    • Neither can the mouth-breather who plays Tyler.

    • Their 'romance' is still so painfully written and trite to watch, I want to stab my eyes out with an X-Acto knife.

    • Happy to see Stamets got over his BF getting the Worf Neck Snap™ so quickly. Chin up, lad, that's the spirit.

    • Captain Lorca was actually a mirror universe terrorist, and he was running the supposedly most important ship in Starfleet? How awful! Terrible! We should see to it nothing like this never happens again! Until ...

    • Uh-oh! We're in the shit! Make the mirror universe Georgiou captain of the supposedly most important ship in Starfleet! What a great idea! What could possibly go wrong, right?!

    • The utter numpties in the writers' room seem to think dropping references to the second-worst Trek series will lend their own shit-show some legitimacy. How cute.

    • You told me there were no Kelpians over there. And then you ate one. That's OK, I forgive you. Lying, betrayal and eating sentient beings happens sometimes. I still love you, you big mutinying, war-starting, Kelpian-eating silly.

    • Hi, my name's L'Rell. And I'm a piece of furniture.

    • Hey guys! Guys! He's really a Klingon, he killed our doctor, but he's allowed to wander around and stuff, and have lunch with us! Group hug!

Sigh. I fucking hate this show.

    • 1. We have no idea about the war for the last 9 months and how hard fought it was.

      CyBrainX
    • r Trek. Nothing new and somewhat expected.CyBrainX
    • 3. There was no terraforming. Just some kind of hyperaccelerated spore growth. Star Trek is full of stories like this. I'd call it science fiction.CyBrainX
    • Sonnequa Martin isn't great but she's far better than Shatner on his best day and better than most of the DS9 cast.CyBrainX
    • I'd rather there be no love stories in Star Trek. I'll give you this one but it's not eye stabbing time quite yet.CyBrainX
    • Stamets is still upset about his BF and told Tyler as much.CyBrainX
    • Captain Lorca looks exactly like Captain Lorca, seems to keep distance from most of the crew except Michael and she didn't know the real Lorca.CyBrainX
    • I don't quite understand the complaint about Georgiou. They absoluitely SHOULD be referencing previous Star Trek. There's a half century of it after all.CyBrainX
    • The bit about Tyler being a Klingon is not accurate at this point and he's not completely unlimited but this is a valid point.CyBrainX
    • +Stamets has travelled infinite realms and met his lover's doppelganger and has some tangible depth of feeling of his still-existence 'somewhere'.detritus
    • The Lorca thing i don't get though - did evilLorca take out his counterpart? If not, how did he rise through ranks so quickly to achieve captaincy?detritus
    • I quite like it all - it's not coheseive with canon and does drop some technical aspects (which made Trek Trek - or, at least - TNG TNG) but it is fun.detritus
    • Lorca's counterpart is presumed dead in the other universe. I have a feeling some kind of time travel is going to alter history and bring everyone back.CyBrainX
    • Yeah. Time travel. The Big Cop-Out. But I doubt they'll do it next week, more like towards the end of the series' entire run.Continuity
    • If Enterprise can end on a TNG holodeck episode, STD can be cheap enough to end on a time travel reset.Continuity
    • Were City on the Edge of Forever, Yesterday's Enterprise, and First Contact big copouts?CyBrainX

This week on Shit Trek: Dysentery: Mary Sue makes a speech, all is forgiven, and the producers give Trekkies the finger (again) by needlessly re-designing the Enterprise.

I just associate it with Monday evenings.

Well I previously complained about the way that so far every situation had been sorted out by utilising punching, shooting and...

But the finale did not do that and was just a tedious hour of television.

*I guess the next paragraph is a spoiler, although it’s that dull that it’s not really spoiling anything*

They seemed to do very very little to sort out a galactic war. A couple of speeches, a Klingon waves a calculator at some other Klingons and the whole show resets like a bog standard sit-com.

So I guess the bottom line is that this show suffers from one problem, terrible terrible writing. Dialogue, episode plots, season arcs; none of it really works.

    • It was so flat for a final. Rushed and felt like an episode of bullet points.thumb_screws
    • And “yo homicidal maniac, here’s the keys to the car”. That was awful.thumb_screws
    • Yeah, it reminded me of when Caprica was cancelled so they just wrapped up everything that would have been the second series in a 5 min montage.Wolfboy
    • Very little to sort out a galactic war? They surgically altered a human to be a dead Klingon warrior with his memories who eventually decided to help and betrayCyBrainX
    • both sides and help end the war by putting T'Rell in a position of power to lead the Klingons. It wasn't very little at all.CyBrainX

+1 for the line about "Bread and Circuses"
+1 million for the Enterprise with Spock and Pike on board and Sarek on the Discovery.
      CyBrainX
    • I’ll go with +1 for Clint Howard - has anyone played more characters across the various Star Treks?Wolfboy

The Fed headquarters in Paris is actually Vaughan city hall:

Part of a proud tradition of Ontario municipal architecture showing up in Trek:

    • Don't go there Worf, that's Umbrella Headquarters!ETM

St: Discovery, keeping up the tradition of overly conveniently wrapping up major plot points in the last 5 minutes.

Holodeck malfunction, we will pull the isolinear chips and restart.

Dr. Crusher get's it on with a ghost, phaser the candle it lives in.

Vicious enemy that demands blood, destruction and near destroys the entire Federation. A conflict that defines the next 100 years or more, just plant a bomb and give up the "calculator".

  • Wolfboy3

In a side note on my last post CyBrainX asked "So, there's nothing this show can do to please you in any way?"

Well as much as I’ve not enjoyed this first season I would love it if they managed turn it around and make it something great. So here are a few things they could do:

1/ Ditch the season arc. I know that’s how modern TV works, but fuck it, this is Star Trek and interesting stand alone stories are a big part of the show. I don’t know how everyone else felt, but for me the show was at its best in the episode where Dwight from The Office was fucking with them in a time loop. It was an entertaining problem, they solved it, they moved on.

They have set up a universe that would now lend itself to episodic television like this - The Federation is decimated and this show is now about rebuilding and all the issues that come with that. With a weakened Federation we could see interactions with aliens looking to take advantage of the situation. Let’s get something other than running and punching back in it - a bit of space politics wouldn’t go a miss. Also, as a point of difference to previous Trek, maybe expand to see the Klingons rebuilding in parallel; these two wider themes/stories could overlap from time to time so it doesn’t feel like the firs season is forgotten about.

2/ Concentrate on the new Captain. Fuck Burnham as the centre of the show, she is a personality vacuum and although would still be there as Science officer, she would not be the focus. Make sure the new Captain is an interesting well written, well acted character too - Burnham has been dull dull dull.

I don’t think there actually needs to be a brand new Captain by the way, I’d be happy with Sarue as Captain and watching how he, as a natural coward/creature of flight develops. But what ever they go with, the Captain has to be interesting and the lynchpin of the show.

3/ More actual characters. Star Trek is an ensemble piece and at the moment there are faces on the bridge every week that I couldn’t name and have had about 10 lines between them across the whole first season. With a more traditional stand alone episode style show we could see these characters fleshed out.

4/ Bring it into line with the prime timeline. I know it’s easy to whinge about this, but fuck it, they made the decision to make this a prequel, not us. So they need to tie off all the flapping loose technological ends; destroy the spore drive for a start and explain why we've never seen it again. That bullshit throw away remark from Stamets about a none human interface was not enough to write it out of the show.

5/ Fuck fan service. It’s the worst of lazy writing in modern entertainment. Get what ever bullshit they’ve got planned with the Enterprise out of the way and concentrate on building new things that we like. You know, like they did with TNG.

6/ Just write it better. I think the main issue with this whole show has been bad writing. Poor dialogue with too much clunky exposition, characters that did not get properly fleshed out and bad plotting both for individual episodes and across the season.

As I mentioned already, I thought the time loop episode was pretty tight and well constructed. I cared about what was happening and I was happy with a resolution that wasn’t just a big showdown. They should concentrate on this kind of writing.

    • Dwight from the Office was also Max Headroom that spastic head in a box from early 80s MTV.
They can't decimate the Federation and stay inline with prime canon
      CyBrainX
    • I don't think it's fan service to leverage a half century of awesome every once in a while. Sarek has been awesome in any Star Trek incarnation. We've had threeCyBrainX
    • I agree about Saru. I think he'd make a good captain and he did an admirable job of making peace with Burnham.CyBrainX
    • I think character development has been very good in some cases but there are a few regulars on the bridge that haven't opened their mouths yet.CyBrainX
    • I'm pretty sure we'll see Georgiu again. They seem quite taken with that character. I just don't want to see anymore mirror nonsense.CyBrainX
    • I'm tired of seeing James Franco waving his hands.CyBrainX
    • Actually, Max Headroom was Matt Frewer.Continuity
