The Fed headquarters in Paris is actually Vaughan city hall:

Part of a proud tradition of Ontario municipal architecture showing up in Trek:

This show should be called Captain of the Discovery.
- This show shouldn't even fucking exist, it's so awful.
And whoever told SMG she can act should never work in Hollywood again.Continuity - She's actually a great actor, but this half-Vulcan character shit is putting the brakes on her talents.i_monk

I still think the Next Generation was the best series and by far but Disocvery has gotten off to the best start of any of them. Not that any of them had stellar first seasons. I like that the series is set 10 years before the original series. It makes you wonder what other familiar characters and races we'll see. I have to admit just having Sarek was worth putting the show in this era. I'm hoping they explain the reason for some of the way advanced tech we're seeing. Mostly the spore drive. Other than that, it's mostly better CGI than 60s paper mache I think people are reacting to. Also, I like the plot twist with the evil captain.

SHIT... i fucking love it any many of my mates! BEST Star Trek series ever... before it was the original show but this new one is that original show on steroid... Space will be fucking brutal and people are broken. It's brillant... All i need now is some unnessary sex and it will be perfect!
- wtf... myself from the mirror dimension is posting here to! i wonder if he's a bad ass?necromation

The two big twists of the show so far were spoiled months ago in online forums, so I think I'm going to stop reading anything and try to enjoy what's left.
- i literally just this past few days finished the latter half of the last series of GoT. If you want to avoid spoilers, it is possible.
Possible, not enjoyable.detritus - I am figuratively incensed by how easily the wall came down in the end.
</spoiler>detritus - Well, I was just going to say how I'm two seasons behind and only had one spoiler so far but now it's two.CyBrainX
- I was just kidding, the wall's still there. I hate that series!detritus

It's all just retcon wankery. I'm sure season 2 will see substantial ratings/subscriber drop off. I planned to stick through season one, but not sure I can make it. And I don't have to even subscribe to watch, it's just on TV here in Canada.

So, did they jump to
a) a parallel universe
b) the future
c) the Mirror Universe specifically?
- Mirror Universe.
Jonathan Frakes spilled that they're going to the MU this season, and he directed the next episode.Continuity - Well, that's my very educated guess, anyway. The problem is I really don't know if I care where they went, actually.Continuity
- And if I'm right, and they spend the rest of the season there, they'll be re-hashing/ripping off Voyager. Again.Continuity
- I think they're ripping off Mirror Mirror if anything. They even showed Sarek with a Spock goatee in coming attractions.CyBrainX
- Mirror Universe.

Yeah, so the next Star Trek film will be directed by Tarantino, and will be R-rated:

... and Patrick Stewart says he might want in on the action:

Seriously fuck this Trek shit, now.
- that's not star trek... that's bullshit on film. Hollywood... you don't need to get edgy / gory-glam to sell trek... stop fucking w/my childhood alreadyPonyBoy
- (and my parent's youth for that matter... my dad's annoyed to hell w/the new show)PonyBoy
- If Paramount _really_ wanted to do right by Trek fans, they'd go back to the prime timeline, stop making fucking prequels,Continuity
- ...and give the franchise to Christopher Nolan.Continuity

So, the ship's engineer was sexually harassed when he was 14 by Kevin Spacey.
Even our TV presidents are rapey.
- Art imitating life, and all of that.Continuity
- and the engineer character is gay.CyBrainX

The Orville is waaaay more Star Trek than this. I'm enjoying both shows tho. The Orville might as well be the next season of TNG.
- Yeah, I mentioned earlier how it surprised me with it's stories so far, and the comedy is not as invasive or slapstick as expected. Episode 3 was really good.ETM
- I think I'm going to have to watch this, despite the mixed reviews.Continuity

I'm digging it, it's very different than the previous shows but I'm ok with this.

i like how the orville fills in all the humor we're missing from the new star trek
- Fuck Seth McFarlane. Any one of us can impersonate Shatner and quote Star Trek for a living.CyBrainX
- and we've had enough buffoonery (in the guise of humor) in Star Trek. That's how you end up with Kirk as a woman, twice.CyBrainX
- Orville is actually quite a surprise. Good stories with mostly subtle humour so far. Episode 3 was pretty deep.ETM

Streaming the second episode now.
Ep 1 was full of clunky dialogue, the Klingons have mushmouth, and Starfleet officers nerve pinching/pulling phasers on each other doesn't feel very Trek to me.
- This didn't feel Trek either:
https://www.youtube.…ETM - But the series went on to be fine :)ETM
- I loved that one. A lot of people got squeamish over that but I don't mind a little horror. That was Contagion from season 2. God, I'm a geek.CyBrainX

But a strange mechanism that we spend the first 2 episodes starting to familiarize ourselves with a ship and crew, then we will be forced to start over again with a new set of characters for ep. 3.

I am concerned about too much of the war narrative taking away from what Trek does best, but still hold out hope. Otherwise it was good.
Not being in the US, I can watch it on regular TV or local streaming service, so there is no investment to stick with it or not.
- CyBrainX1
I have to say, those first two episodes were pretty great. Well acted, great show intro, great dialogue too. I hid from spoilers and didn't know about the one familiar character which was extremely well handled too. I've always thought Star Trek was better on TV than movies. It can spend more time on ideas, doesn't have to be so action oriented all the time, and doesn't require a one dimensional villain.
- Thanks for the review! I might have to check it out.monospaced
