The World Health Organization on Monday proposed an official name for the illness caused by new coronavirus: COVID-19.
The World Health Organization said it had chosen a name for the disease that makes no reference to places, animals or people to avoid stigmatizing anyone.

There's plenty of good to say about China - their totalitarian set up means they can push reforms and engineer mass solutions in a way that 'western' countries can't begin to match (compare the roll out of high speed rail in China against HS2 in the UK or the the very-much-not- high-speed rail in the states).
Most solar power comes from China in one way or another due to their massive manufacturing capacity (and, admittedly, their fucking up the market for foreign competitors a few years ago).
I'm very interested in what they're doing to fix environmental problems over there - Google 'China Dedesertification' to see the efforts they're putting in to fighting back against envirnonmental degradation. The techniques used will eventually be rolled out across Northern Africa and perhaps the middle east eventually too.
eg.
It's very easy to pick up on all their failings, but that tends to be done through envious and dismissive Western lens - the fact is that they have over a Billion people that they've pulled out of third world status in less than half of our lifetimes. Their emissions and environmental damage is high, but that's because we here in the West off-loaded our problems to them.
Per capita, they're still way behind the US, for example, which has regregious levels of impact given their population is a third the size of China's.
The near-future is China's, as was the not so distant past - our ridicule and fear says more about us than their right to determine and develop their fate.
- it's not all rosy, of course - but then it's hardly fields of sweet peach pussy here in the west either.Nairn

Some interesting writings by a former insider on how the Chinese Community Party works behind the scenes. The government likes to maintain an image of total unity and the Western media reinforces this perception with all the techno-dystopian stories about China. But in reality there is a constant power struggle going on behind the scenes between different factions of the party.
- How could anyone think there was anything but a constant power struggle going on behind the curtainGnash

China is in bad shape...grafician - True and you can add demographic crisis. But it's not like USA and Russia don't also face problemsyuekit
- The best thing for China would be to get rid of Xi and put a more liberal politician in charge, end zero COVID and reform the economy.yuekit
- Ease up on the censorship, declare they have no intention of invading Taiwan. None of this costs China anything but dogmatic thinking is a hell of a drug.yuekit

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Sunday that it is time for the U.S. to make clear that it would defend Taiwan from a Chinese invasion and ditch its longstanding strategic ambiguity.
https://asia.nikkei.com/Politics…
"It is time to abandon this ambiguity strategy. The people of Taiwan share our universal values, so I think the U.S. should firmly abandon its ambiguity," he said.
Abe added that "a Taiwan contingency is a Japan contingency," explaining that Japan's westernmost inhabited island of Yonaguni is just 110 km from Taiwan's main island. If China were to conduct an operation, it would first seek to establish air and sea superiority around Taiwan, he said.
"If it were to secure wide air superiority, it would also cover Japan's airspace. [China] would conduct operations in and above the waters too, so this would affect Japan's territorial waters, or at least our exclusive economic zone."
On the situation in Ukraine, Abe said: "Japan's stance is clear in that Russia's violent actions cannot be tolerated. Together with the U.S. and G-7, we need to assist Ukraine in various ways."
- war is like candy for opportunistssted
- Of course invasion of Taiwan is not imminent, rather the situation is forcing countries to confront the reality of it.yuekit
- Seems possible that by the end of all this, CCP will be furious at Putin for pissing on their parade with this ill-conceived invasion.yuekit
