Packaging is so wasteful.
Think of a bag of candy. Each small piece is wrapped in paper, foil and ink. Then the bunch is in a plastic bag which is also printed with the branding and in color.
Then the store got their batch of candy bags in boxes which were also labeled with ink.
All that waste.

yeah, and? no shit packaging is wasteful. people want all of their things packaged in little other things so they can put them in tiny little other things.
But it looks cool! AND it's convenient! or something...

Many years ago, you could laugh at the idea of such a device, but there are folks seriously working on the idea.

Was in Japan recently. For such a forward thinking country they use a lot of packaging and a lot of plastic bags.
I'm hoping that their recycling is just so good and efficient that they can afford to do this.An example - buying 3 cakes at a bakery department of a supermarket. In the UK you'd either get all three bundled into a box or chucked into a bag - maybe a little greaseproof paper slip around each one.
In Japan (and this wasn't just a one-off, it happened in three different places) each cake was wrapped in the greaseproof paper, then each was put in its own bag, then all three put into one bag.
Any time we bought something we were automatically given bags and had to keep refusing as we were just stuffing stuff into the bags we already had.- They also don't have public garbage cans, so there is the expectation that the bags will be reused for carrying garbage home.i_monk

Kill yourself, it's the only way to be sure.

That's true, but designing this waste paid my bills for a long time. And the bills of some other people around here.
- so i guess it's all worth it?sarahfailin
- No, I'd prefer designing only environmentally friendly, recycable packaging. But sadly I mostly can't influence decisions like that.grotesk_neue
