I'm about to be offered a position as a senior designer (in web & print) for a big dot com specializing in online home improvement tools. They and I are based in a small city in Northern CA, several hours from the Bay.
Salary research yields the following numbers:
— $74k according to Payscale after sharing my work history
— $82.8k national median or the position, according to Glassdoor (though they predict closer to 67 for my region of California)
— $90k according to Indeed.comWhat should I expect and ask for in order to land on a number that values me properly?

I fully expect them to lowball me to the tune of 55k. Don't know why, just trying to prep for a drastically low first offer.

When discussing your wage, never refer to it as "pay" or "salary", ONLY refer to it as "compensation package" as in, "What is the compensation package?" This elevates the dialogue with the understanding that they are rewarding your services for work you do vs. just paying you and getting nothing in return. Because it's a two-way street, your talents for cash.
Also, consider the job title. If they can't pay tons, then ASK for a more senior title, that way when you leave it will be for even higher salary. iMO it would be worth it to take a low salary for a while with great title. If the pay is low and the title is low then you may have to rethink or just take the job temporarily if you need it bad enough.
You can also ask for a 6 month performance review be written in your contract to give them to chance to up the salary/job title.

- This is not bad advice. If they can't afford a certain level of pay, they can still sweeten your compensation with vacation days, WFH flexibility, etc.baseline_shift

If you don't suck, ask for 95k like pocket says. If they really want you, then they'll say what their budget is for the position, and they'll try to match what you want or get close to it. It's better to ask for more.

Senior designer in both print and web? 85K is fair enough, but you're in CA so 90 shouldn't be a problem, not that it's a big difference.

85k is okay. If you're gonna put a cap on how much you can make then 95k could be decent enough to expand on.

FYI - if you ask for say...95k and your last job you were making only 75k, you will never get the job. Im not sure what your previous salary was, but don't be a fool and ask for 20k more than your last job. This is a newer practice on how company figure out what to pay their new hires these days. I know of at least three people that asked for at least a 20-35% pay raise from there last job and got laughed out of the office without the job that they just beat several other candidates for.

Remember that salary is one thing but vacation time, signing bonus, annual bonus are a complete other thing. I hear all too often that people in our industry accept the first thing that comes in.
