FYI - if you ask for say...95k and your last job you were making only 75k, you will never get the job. Im not sure what your previous salary was, but don't be a fool and ask for 20k more than your last job. This is a newer practice on how company figure out what to pay their new hires these days. I know of at least three people that asked for at least a 20-35% pay raise from there last job and got laughed out of the office without the job that they just beat several other candidates for.

    Good luck!

    • So how do we progress in the world?mugwart
    • the only way you're going to progress is by getting a job title change (since there are job title $ limits) if you can't get the $, ask for a better job title..robotron3k
    • how does this work if you are moving markets? where a 20k increase matches the COL difference?akiersky
    • @utopian Have you experienced a company reaching out to a candidate's past employer(s) and asking what they were paid?BrokenHD
    • This isn't necessarily true. I've negotiated 20k pay bumps within the same company. Provide value and you can get paid.baseline_shift
