Never, ever fuck with someone that has less to lose than you.
- Essentially minding your own business.bklyndroobeki
- Yes, but poor people will fuck you up much sooner, higher probability than someone with far more to lose or with more responsibility. I was poor.drake-von-drake

Learn the hardest things that no one wants to touch.
Fuck being trendy, fads come and go, principles still remain - set out to do the hardest thing and don't stop till its done.
Want to learn photography - get a film camera, learn to develop, process film etc.
No short cuts.Work and squat all day and all night, tell people what you are doing and ask for help. Thank them with decent beer/cider/food.
That said - sleep more, 5 hours is not healthy.
eat healthy, sit up straight. You will hate apples / windows in years to come so just learn how they work to get work done.
clear your mind every now again and don't be afraid to do 180 degrees on ideas, passions and life. And for god sake don't become a dick - there are too many of those around!
- agree except for the cider partsarahfailin

oh and plan the shit out of your end goal. Know every step possible before you start. Use boring sprint/agile process if necessary.
Work from the ground up. Working on final designs first come apart faster than slapped together and a mess to re-arrange.

in your spare time do something else totally unrelated to design. the creative world is far too introspective - it's so easy to disappear up your own arse

The world isn't made entirely from Hadid, Aalto, or Ando projects - don't get arsey when you start a new architectural gig and the first thing you are asked to do is design a cupboard or toilet cubicle in a faceless office building.

Don't give a sht about up/down votes on qbn.

If you want to make a zine or book in your spare time make sure it's interesting and fun.
There's way too many boring independent projects out there from people trying too hard to be intellectual.

All that glitters isn't gold.

1. You're not perfect, you never will be, and sometimes you will fail.
2. Fleeting, anonymous approval and praise from strangers on the Internet will never be a substitute for legitimate self esteem, and simply waking up every single day appreciating the fact that you're alive for yet another day.

Get to know people in your industry, especially the older/experienced ones. Its 80% who you know and 20% talent.

Stop instagramming everything young kids, no one really cares.

High School is a microcosm of adult life. Nearly everything you learned there will apply but with greater importance or consequences. If you did well socially, go corporate. You'll move up fast and navigate the bureaucracy of office politics with ease. If you were the smart but an anti-social outcast, become a consultant or start your own company. For everything in between, there are natural transitions to the 'real' world leveraging your talents and your specific resources, whatever they may be. If you go against the grain because you evolved or are evolving it'll be hard but you can do it and it will be your story to tell. In the end whatever you do, make sure it's something you love because that's the secret to happiness, and happiness is one of the ultimate goals in life.
Did I take this exercise too seriously?
- I disagree - I can see what you mean in relation to certain academic character types, but for everyone else, it all goes out the window with adulthood.detritus

Get into a good/respected agency early. Whether as an intern or very junior level.
Agency names, reputation, client recognition matter as you move along in a career. Plus there are more opportunities in making good contacts.
Having no "known" clients in your book can be detrimental, no matter how good the work is.
- Sad although true.
I did nothing on a show and got more notice than when I did a lot on a nothing show. Oh the irony!mugwart

A very important part of advertising/design that's often overlooked is how crucial it is to be able to sell your idea/design to your coworkers and clients.
If you can't put words to why your work is the best solution, either hook up with someone who can, learn how to do it or get out quick.
