We have a couple of top people who are constantly clashing heads. I've been told it's a battle of egos. Why do people have egos?

To push things forward.

Actually, I can also see this happening in relationships in power struggles.

It almost seems selfish.

Most people I've worked with who have egos are insecure and failures.
Most of the time it's just people who refuse to admit they're just like you or me.
- I was thinking insecure a few minutes agopinkfloyd
- Id say immature or naive long before insecure.monospaced

ego is a form of power control because of insecurity of losing something?

Everyone has an ego. How much they express it or expect people to pay attention to it differs throughout their lives and situations. More people express it I feel because the Internet fuels that path. YouTube and Twitter and status updates and Likes. It's all a way for people to insist others pay attention to their thoughts and opinions. Followers and friends all add to this sense of ego. That's part of "why people have" egos I would say.
I also notice that children have a strong sense of ego. Don't blame them. They are the centers of their little universes and have people beckoning to their every call. Most people grow out of this. Many don't. That is another reason I'd say. The constant insistence that others listen to them, to obey them and to think like them. Their overwhelming need to fix people to their own will. It's all part of their childish egos not being controlled. Man I'm high.
Just my thoughts on your question.

So is it better to not have or minimize one's ego?
- In my experience, knowing when and where to humble ones ego is a good skill to have. Other times it makes sense to flaunt it.monospaced
- Seems like one needs to gain respect before they can be egotistical.monospaced
- apparently you're more relatable when highpinkfloyd
- That's only because you agree with my opinions and reading them strokes your fragile ego. ;)monospaced

Are there any benefits to an ego?
- scarabin1
ego is a survival tool. it's the thing that gives a person a sense of "i".
there's nothing wrong with having one, everyone does. it's only a problem when you allow it to govern all of your actions.
temper ego with mindfulness (being aware of your actions, allowing yourself to observe your thoughts/opinions and understand why you have them) and you come closer to happiness.
sometimes folks get caught up in the river of "me" and just need to step back onto the bank and observe it a while.

also, ego isn't the same as pride

We have this guy in the office who is brilliant with his work, yet he doesn't get along with 95% of the staff. He brings in a lot of revenue so the boss won't get rid of him but they say he's got a big ego. He treats his coworkers not like coworkers, but more like servants he wants to bend to their knees.
- He has to learn. either the easy way with a manager actually managing him, or the hard way: someone above him calling him on it and being punished.monospaced
- I heard he was fired in 3 previous jobs.pinkfloyd
- Btw, the 2 people above him are too weak so he's peacocking around the office.pinkfloyd
- But he's afraid of me so he doesn't bother me.pinkfloyd
- His superiors won't take a bullet for him when he pisses off a client.monospaced

- Does he work directly with clients ever?bainbridge
- Do you think he is happy in his life?bainbridge
- i know of some personal stress he's going through from being sued, i think his other personal life seems averagepinkfloyd

If you talk about how great you are, sometimes people will believe you and if you want to be successful, convincing other people that you are feels good.
But people always like humble, genuine people.

It's like art. Curators and galleries can write long essays about an artist's accomplishments and theories for bs work, but it will help sell the work. Artists with big egos can sell dumb art for huge prices.
