Everyone has an ego. How much they express it or expect people to pay attention to it differs throughout their lives and situations. More people express it I feel because the Internet fuels that path. YouTube and Twitter and status updates and Likes. It's all a way for people to insist others pay attention to their thoughts and opinions. Followers and friends all add to this sense of ego. That's part of "why people have" egos I would say.

I also notice that children have a strong sense of ego. Don't blame them. They are the centers of their little universes and have people beckoning to their every call. Most people grow out of this. Many don't. That is another reason I'd say. The constant insistence that others listen to them, to obey them and to think like them. Their overwhelming need to fix people to their own will. It's all part of their childish egos not being controlled. Man I'm high.

Just my thoughts on your question.
