Why on earth would you need to use one?
If you insist, how about this...
https://thenounproject.com/term/…- sometimes you just don't want to contaminate your designs with fb, twitter or instagram, a well recognized symbol instead would make sense.uan
- Don't contaminate them at all.monoboy
- Astonishing the amount of half wits incapable of understanding the conceptset
- Though to be fair I wasn't exactly the most eloquent in my original postset
- The point i was making. Putting social media icons in the header of your website just encourages visitors to leave? No point.monoboy
- You clearly don't work in the industry.set
- 15 years my friend. 12 Awards. Show me yours.monoboy
- Lol. Brands shouldn't link to their social media profiles? What a fuckwit...set
- "Header'.you fuckwit.monoboy
- Who said anything about only ever needing said icon to use in the header? What an astonishing chuffnut.set
- Sense, you make none of it...set
- Often there's not enough room to display all the icons of all the platforms without a dropdown or popup, so there needs to be a universal social icon..set
- What part of that are you failing to understand?set
- I only call you a fuckwit in jest and I mean no offence old bean, but I really don't understand your input in this thread...set
- Tell you what, I'll just let you get back to making an icon nobody will understand.monoboy
- You could say that about any icon ever made, before it became recognised. Please be in your way, and consider your opinion void.set
- You mentioned 'in the header' in your original post.monoboy

no i think what he means is an icon to represent all the social channels for that website/company, rather than a sharing thing.
Acme Widgets has a website, and they also have a twitter, a g+, facebook, pinterest, ello, etc etc. Rather than have a ton of icons, set's looking for an icon that says "click here for all our other channels'.
if i understand it right.
which i probably don't.
- realistically though most of these companies post the same shit across all channels, so i'm not sure how important this ishans_glib
- You got it. And you're right with the note but some people only use one platform, like myself (twitter) so it's totally necessary to offer all platformsset
- Often there's not enough room to display all the icons of all the platforms without a dropdown or popup, so there needs to be a universal social icon..set

- or link to the 'social sphere' that creepy place on the internetsuan
- Yea. This one just says 'open a new window' to me, could be a link to anything. It doesn't say social media or 'follow us', to me..set

There are definitely a few out there, but nothing universal.
I like the idea of coming up with one, even if it's a cleaned up version of something that already exists, and maybe creating a dedicated website for it, sharing it and getting it to go viral so that we can finally have a widely recognisable icon for social.
Definitely a proverbial hole that needs to be filled...
- Who's up for a little project?set
- not a bad idea at all.renderedred

A few points on social media follow buttons...
- Utter tripeset
- If I'm on the site of a brand I like the look of, I want to follow them on twitter so I can keep a tab on them. If I can't find the twitter link anywhere....set
- I won't follow them and would consequently soon forget about the brand. That article is nonsensical chuff.set
- I'm guessing you have a fax number on your business card.monoboy
- Like the article said, you can encourage social media interaction within your content.monoboy
- Thanks for coming in today thoughset
- Nothing worse than being forced to use some shitty embedded option. Users are intelligent enough to come back to the website of they do desire.set
- If they so desire*set
- Your mentality is to force users into doing something they don't want to. Not cool...set
- Again, you misinterpret. But I'm done now. Bored.monoboy
- I thought you were done yesterday lol. Little divaset
- Thanks for coming inset

What does "social" mean if not "share"? I can't think of a leading social media site/service that isn't just a proprietary way of sharing links, photos, opinions, or whatever.
- The act of sharing a specific peice of content and the act of being taken to a social media profile page are two totally different things....set
- Then it isn't "social" the icon needs to convey, it's "profile".i_monk
- Deep. Of course it's social. Social media profile. The pointless resistance and half wittery in this thread is astoundingset
- So what exactly would differ b/w a generic "profile" icon and a generic "social media profile" icon?
And don't be a dick.i_monk

Social media is the people's media, rise up and share a video etc.

What about using the hashtag/number/pound sign?
1) Most of the major social networking sites use the hashtag.
2) One could argue, a secondary goal of a social network is increasing your numbers; be it followers, likes, shares, etc. there’s an implied association with the number sign.
3) Can’t think of a third reason.

an icon to hide other icons inside of it doesn't seem like a good reason to need a new icon.
- hans_glib0
nice idea, but doesn't the share icon already fulfil both roles?
ie the idea of shoving stuff out to your network.- i mean it's not perfect , but like the "hamburger", it has become accepted shorthand for share/socialhans_glib
- It doesn't, no. The share icon is to share a specific page or piece of content, the social icon simply takes you to the profile page on the social platformset
- For instance, in the header you have a row of social icons that take you off to the brands profile on each platform. The social icon would represent these iconsset

We always have all of our icons, or just the few icons in a specific campaign.
I agree with ^^ So you would click the general social icon, it would have a roll over with all of the social properties? Too many steps.
- Only in the instance when there's no practical room for all of them. What's so hard to understand?set
