Powerwall is a home battery that charges using electricity generated from solar panels, or when utility rates are low, and powers your home in the evening. It also fortifies your home against power outages by providing a backup electricity supply. Automated, compact and simple to install, Powerwall offers independence from the utility grid and the security of an emergency backup.

    hoped for something like this

...but a big wall battery is a start I guess

  • GeorgesII0

I actually jumped when he said the battery pack were only going to cost $500 each,
Elon Musk just made high powered DIY projects possible,

paging scarabin: I think it's time you upgrade your buggy

  • GeorgesII-2

    open sourced too,
    does he have a deathwish?

  • uan1

were did you get that 500$ from?
I read the 10 kWh version will cost $3,500, and the 7 kWh version will cost $3,000.

    • yeah just saw the price :(
I was hoping for 10 kWh battlebots...
      GeorgesII
    • It's still kind of incredible.jtb26
    • That price literally drew applause in the keynote.jtb26
    • That doesn't mean that much. More or less, it's a start. The tech is open source, so others can get in there and beat them on cost.jtb26

I think Musk is really changing the world with his products and ideas. He shows that change / innovation is possible and is not tied to ideology. He manages to sell sustainable products to people that don't give a fuck about environment.

    • he's allowed to do it cause tesla is owned by other big corpsyurimon
    • Tesla is owned by which other big corp?monospaced
    • Even with their funding how do you figure that the big corps are what allow it? He was doing this anyway.monospaced
    • that information is not public, some lists going around internet, but without source declaration (I don't know how to google this).uan
    • official channel say Munsk in majority.uan
    • Wikipedia says he's under 30%. lots of investors own parts but that doesn't mean in any way they are controlling.monospaced
    • ofcourse yurimon has a way to spin this negatively.inteliboy
    • its all about control, ask why this guy is was killed? https://www.youtube.…yurimon
    • its like you guys know anything about this world.yurimon
    • Hey take off the tinfoil hat for a ducking second. This is a fuckkng battery you freak.monospaced
    • And now the government won't let me spell a bad word on my phone right?monospaced
    • My friend works at a hospital with a conspiracy nut like yurimon. At first I thought he was annoying and crazy, now his lunacy is just entertaining.BuddhaHat
    • And almost always factually incorrect.BuddhaHat
    • Ignantset
    • imo, even if you want to believe Dr. Steven Greer and the disclosure project (and I wish he is legit), we have to live with what is available now.uan
    • and this powerwall technology makes energy storage affordable and attractive to a vast amount of households. that's what counts.uan
    • I dont believe steven greer. nut bag. follow the deaths of inventors is actually factual not in the conspiracy. tech will be mainstream and big corpsyurimon
    • will continue to control energy in its current path of your complacency. nothing crazy just the power structure of the world now.yurimon
    • 2nd of all you cant compare who i am or what i believe to other people thats just stupid... shows your ignorance.yurimon
    • You do it constantly you damn hypocrite.monospaced
    • I can compare yurimon, because you spout exactly the same dribble as the person I talked about. The Zeitgeit-esque paranoia is strong with you, Yuri.BuddhaHat
    • Its not paranoia, Its an extreme desired outcome of power. you have to think in 10 year spans and possible directions. there are facts that point to who's inyurimon
    • power, so ignorant for you not to completely see where things can go if the pattern continues. its like you been sleeping for 20 years.yurimon
    • 2nd of all when i post links. i dont care if its different. doesnt matter if its agreed to hopefuly point to facts cause we learn from the discussion.yurimon
    • I'm not attached to ideas cause I keep an open mind. however some things are already proven. somethings are not. so dont be ignantyurimon

i have solar panels so i bought this right away.

although, there's no proof of the things he was showing off like when the meters that were showing that they weren't using the grid the whole time.

  • _niko0

so how much are solar panels then?

    • $15k for a modest house, last I lookedformed
    • With a huge tax break I hear.monospaced
    • My parents paid 40k for a single family home, got 30% tax credit. They didn't buy batteries. The power goes into the house or sells back to the grid.Hayoth

Rumorville...Apple is trying to buy Tesla

    • So we'll need to upgrade our cars every 12 months?BusterBoy

Google almost bought them, deal was made and hands were shook. But Tesla started making some money and backed out. Too bad, would have shot Google to the moon (literally! Ha).

I like Musk. He's the first we've seen, at least so publicly, that is changing things. Just saw another Tesla at the grocery yesterday...damn, what a well executed car! Amazing acceleration, reasonable price, etc., etc. Another great example that design can really help.

I think it puts Apple in perspective, too. All the fan boys will keep talking up how great it is, but really, they are one of the most selfish companies out there. Look at the profit margins. They could be making things for low income, etc., etc., if they cared, but they only about profits. That's fine, but there's nothing "feel good" about Apple.

I sure wish I had bought some Tesla stock, not because of the bubble its in, but because I like this guys vision and ability to execute on it.

    • Not only do they put apple in perspective, but also every other company in the area. Not fair to compare only to apple.monospaced
    • Apple make computers n shit. What's this got to do with Tesla?inteliboy
    • "Oh look at this interesting company! Time to bash Apple yet again!" Obsessed cunts.inteliboy
    • ^ sorry that reads really over the top. didn't mean to be a dickhead lol.inteliboy
    • Apple is the only company that has "fanboys" and people obsessed with it. People don't drool over Google or MS or Facebook.formed
    • I am not bashing Apple, I love them and think they've changed the design world. No other company I can think of that is so uncompromising, so apt comparisonformed
    • $349 Apple Watch costs $83.70 to make. That's a big ass margin. http://www.huffingto…BuddhaHat
    • $83.70 in parts does not reflect the costs of design/R&D, developing, manufacturing and marketing a product.evilpeacock
    • it reflects the cost of manufacturing, it's a big ass margin anyway you look at itformed
    • they don't expect it to be a hit yetuan
    • Also those breakdowns have never been even remotely close to actual costs. Not in all of history of guessing what apple pays have they been accurate.monospaced

aaaaaand sold out till mid 2016

" 38,000 reservations have been received, which should take up the expected production through mid-2016, and demand is high enough to account for all of the Gigafactory's production if they devoted it just to stationary batteries. That includes some 2,500 companies that are interested in the commercial-ready Powerpack (with orders averaging around 10 units each), and Musk said he estimates that commercial interest in Tesla Energy will account for 5-10 more megawatt hours than residential. To clear up one question about the Powerwall, he mentioned that while it doesn't have a DC-to-AC inverter included, it does have a DC-to-DC unit built in."

I'm a bit of a Musk fanboy and I super appreciate what he's trying to do with Tesla in the long-game, using the quality car aspect as a ..er.. vehicle to sneak in a paradigm-catalysing energy concern right into the middle of the American consciousness - but this power wall strikes me as a bit of an over-reach. Certainly a bit too early a play.

It has a very particular and limited usage scenario that might work for some monied people in California, but not much beyond that. Certainly not the all-in solution for going off-grid, certainly not ideal for people in remote regions, and not much use to most urbanites outside of suburban America.

The power density and output is just.. not enough.

    And it's expensive.

There's a good wee breakdown here on the Register today..

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/201…

    .

If I had the money, I'd 'just' but an extra Model S and use that as a battery :) God, I want one of those cars. Even better, two.

    • Isn't Tesla's entire approach to sell to the monied/high end market first?yuekit
    • yeah, which is fine for cars - less so for battery packs aimed at middle-income consumers with an environmental bent.detritus
    • I think 'off-grid' as a total concept is too extreme and would not be a successful strategy to gun for. I see this as a softening of our dependence...Horp
    • ... with more innovations to follow in order to create a steady evolution from the edwardian idea of central service to the new idea of communal/domestic hubs.Horp
    • Trouble is, they're a good decade off from make Lithium-based batteries significantly more practical than lead acid ones for home use.detritus
    • My parents ordered one. They are NOT rich. They have had solar panels on their Cali home for over 25 years.monospaced
    • They are nearly off-grid without the battery, and with it they will basically be off.monospaced
  • detritus2

And I completely agree with what formed says about Apple — they have the capital, the culture and the competence to push forward some truly great and transformative technologies, but they spend piffling amounts compared to other companies on development, most of which ends up going to 'interesting' but not particularly transformative details such as alloys for finish, or slightly-increased scratch resostance (which they bought-in, then drove into the ground anyway) etc.

Google irritates me, but its Blue Skies approach is uplifting and generally beneficial.

Just imagine if Apple put 5% of annual profit into Fusion or Fourth Generation Nuclear? Imagine they made a Gigafactory of their own? Or announced their own hyperloop-alike?

But nope. Just tighter release cycles with increased obsolescence and a constant eye on revenue.

    Apple is safe.
    Apple is boring.
    Apple is mere consumer churn.
    Apple is just about money.

    • Apple can do what they like, of course.

I just wish fanboys would stfu about how great they are. They're not.
      detritus
    • You do realize apple has built some of the largest alternative energy plants on the planet right?monospaced
    • For general sale as a product, or to improve their brand image and internal cost?detritus
    • Walmart have similarly invested heavily in Solar, on the top of their buildings, for similar reasons. So?detritus
    • I take it back, Apple's plants aren't that big, and it's to offset their own footprint. It's impressive, but I did exaggerate.monospaced
    • and for the record, I do agree it would be great to see Apple do something monumentally good with those hundreds of billions.monospaced
    • I just hope we can keep the discussions in this thread more about Tesla and the good they're doing, instead of turning it into an Apple discussion.monospaced
