Firstly, I know nothing about this type of internet magic.
I'm looking for a brief explanation of the impact (if any?) that the recent changes in googles algorithms will have on those websites that don't adopt a mobile friendly option.
How much impact will it have on search rankings.?
Thanks

Some info on it here:

I am curious how this will impact things, overall. It's pretty ridiculous to think that all sites need to be completely optimized for mobile. I know my clients don't view via mobile.
If they really are skewing it dramatically to mobile, here's one more step to dumbing down the web. Woohoo.
(that article really didn't say anything new or details, that I saw)
- My understanding is that the algorithm will only affect search results on mobile devices. It will push the most relevant result that's mobile ready to the top.moniker
- it's a kind of fascism isn't it? if you can't be bothered to have a mobile site - well then we won't recommend you. cuntshans_glib
- So, those folk that are suggesting that all (mobile and non-mobile) search rankings will be effected are being economic with the truth?Morning_star
- It benefits everyone to have a mobile version of your site, so I expect they're just not correcting peoples assumptions about it.moniker
- its ignorant to think that people are not going to attempt to view your site on mobile. Mobile is at least 50% traffic on popular sites.sherm
- However, if you've never cared about google rankings... carry on as usual.sherm

Sigh. They are always tweaking them.

@formed " I know my clients don't view via mobile."
How do you know that for sure?

Obviously new clients need to see the site, that's why I bothered posting a question.
It would make sense if it is only pushing results that are actually searched on a mobile device. It sure would be nice if there was some actual real info on it, that's a pretty big question mark and a sizable investment for many. It's not just "click that button and it magically becomes beautiful on a mobile device".
Yes, am a confident clients, and prospective clients, aren't making decisions on a phone. I'd be surprised if there are many creative companies that land jobs solely based on viewing on a phone. Mobile compatible is a huge difference from mobile optimized (imho).
- Sure, but a lot of clients want to hire people/firms that design and develop for mobile.
First red flag is if their site isn't mobile ready.moniker - But as you say, they're likely not looking you up on their phones.moniker
- I guess it depends on the device, some sites, like mine, competitors, work on mobile, but they aren't responsiveformed

Pretty simple way to tricky this for search - You are missing a big opportunity by ignoring it. If your site is well made making it responsive should be bloody simple.
As far as I can tell from dicking around with Google's "is it mobile friendly" tool https://www.google.co.uk/webmast… it appears to look for viewport meta tags for specifying scale, and some media queries in CSS.
The charity I work for's site passes the test but it's mobile experience is horrible - http://www.appsforgood.org/ - It's not a priority for us as our traffic is low and our main audience is teachers checking us out during work hours on desktops, and students using tablets/laptops to access our course - Our dashboard after login is fully responsive.

ughft. Google 'very kindly' warned me about this a couple of months ago and obviously I've done fuck all to address the situation.
My laser site's failing the test badly, so I'm going to try and remake it quickly tonight (it's a fairly standard 4 column layout anyway).
I'm going to try and do it in PureCSS as I've a wee bit of experience in it — but before I plough on, would any of you have any decent suggestions for Bootstrap/etc layout generators, which I can quickly use, then strip, as a basis?
- Captain obvious here but this is a good starting point: http://getbootstrap.…. Just edit one of these if it needs to be simple.sausages
- Mm, thanks, but I mean there were actual layout generators that output Bootstrap (etc) code. No worries, I'm just going with PureCSS anyway. Thanks!detritus

afaik this just effects mobile searches.
