I have an opportunity to work in a really cool role at a great company. The downside is that it's in Newark. Would it be better to live in New York or New Jersey (not Newark)? Anyone have any experience with this?

New Jersey...the commuting, and NJ/NY combo taxes will crush you.

Live in Jersey City. Easy access to NY and you don't have to deal with some of the ridiculous rent in NY. It's a cool neighborhood with awesome food.
It's enough of a pain in the ass to get from Brooklyn or Queens to Manhattan as it is. Why add needing to get to Newark on top of that?

If you're from the suburb, you might get tired of the NYC life after a few years or love it.

people enjoy hoboken too.
sort of a post college town. lots of single slimmies if you're into that.
jersey city and battery park are doable too.- sports bar types. cant relate :(yurimon

Actually, it would be kinda dumb to move to NYC for a job in NJ. You're commute would be longer, and you get LESS SPACE.

Jersey City/Hoboken.
If you were working in Brooklyn/Manhattan I'd consider moving to one of those, but if you're working in Newark then Jersey City/Hoboken is convenient for both, and cheaper than the benefits of NYC.

Make sure you have easy access to Path trains and not just NJ transit?

Do you have a car? If you don't have a car and want to live in NYC then consider about a 45min/ hour commute each way to get door to door from NYC > Newark. Living in NJ is great, don't believe the stereotypes.
Here's where not to live: Newark, Irvington, & Paterson.

New Jersey is the "armpit" of America...Or so I've been told.

stay in NJ.
Live by the water. Get a great view of Manhattan.

Thanks, guys. Jersey City sounds interesting. A Brooklyn friend told me that lots of artists have moved there. I'm bummed because I'd love to live in Brooklyn but the commute just seems awful. I wouldn't mind an hour car commute if that's all it is but 1.5-2 hours each way is hell.
Yes, I have a car and will likely keep it.
- plus you're stuck in brooklyn if anything happens, like a hurricane, big storm, &cdoesnotexist

From Jersey City, you have straight shot to Newark via PATH train or from Hoboken.
Many Brooklyn artists or Bohemian types have moved to Jersey City.
There are a lot of east Indian population in the area due to tech and financial firms having back office operations in Jersey City. More diverse and creative.
Hoboken is nice and more white but it is more frat boy. Lots of irish pubs and drunk 'just out of college'.
