I can tell you what NOT to do there, definitely DON'T do drugs. Do not even think about it. That is all i know. Other than that, enjoy!

Try to check out Maggie Choo's in Silom (under Novotel), my favourite bar here.
- Skybar (Lebua) is an obvious one but also worth a visit, just prepare to pay THB1000 for a cocktail!SteveZissou
- hated the skybar... i mean the view is great and the cocktails are decent, but tourists get pushed through like sheep - no fun imod_gitale

take a cycling tour through the old neighbourhoods. (really i mean it – there are some bike companys around. the best way to explore the traditional lifestyle)
also visit the weekendmarket.
and try different kinds of food.

what is the reason you go there ? Do you want to do the tourist stuff like temples and markets ? or are you looking for prostitutes and STD's ? Or do you just need somewhere to crash before traveling to the islands ?
If you clarify I might be able to make some suggestions.

my housemate went. bounced around bunch of different islands. said best way to do it is befriend other travellers going the same way.
said same thing: avoid buying drugs as you can get lured to sketchy places. oh and you can fire an rpg at a cow for something like 1000 bhat

if you are there long enough make sure and try to make it to chaing mai. hit up all the markets you can. it's an amazing place.
- +1 for Chiang Mai. But that town is best if you can really spend some time there.nikdaum

I just recommended avoiding the touristy areas like Khao San Road. Shitty hotels, food, and people. Staying by the river is nice, as you have easy access to river taxis. China town is cool. So are some of the canal filled neighborhoods across the river. Get walking early to avoid the heat.
