Watch out for filezilla, I just tried to download it from sourceforge (linked from the filezilla website)and all I got was a bunch of search hijacks and various other forms of malware - "vosteran". Looks like it's be compromised.

are you sure you clicked the right link? often times there are a bunch of download now buttons all over those pages, but they are links for other stuff, could be misleading if you don't bother to read the text

I concur. I had this happen too. From sourceforge, with the correct link. You have to be careful with the soureforge installer itself. Double-check every screen for checkboxes etc. It's the add-on, "upsell" crap that is compromised.
At least, start your download here, but watch the installer options.

if you go to this page:
https://filezilla-project.org/do…you'll see a flash of a normal link, then the download link magically changes to a 'sourceforge' button.
That's what got me. Total BS.

Google Chrome.

If you're on Windows, use Ninite for the downloading/updating the basics.
It's a single installer for lots of applications (you select them and it creates a unique installer for the ones you choose) and they always build it with 0 malware and 0 input needed.
This is my standard installer for any newly installed Windows 7 Build. If Windows 8 I include Classic Shell and remove Security Essentials.

yeah I lost all trust in sourceforge and FZ since then and don't use it anymore. The devs of FZ react pretty selfish and arrogant to this. I use transmit on mac now but haven't found a good alternative on PC - do you guys have one?
- elahon0
Yup, this happened to me a few weeks ago. And I know I clicked the correct download button because FZ started downloading, but then that fucking Mac Repair malware bullshit was installed as well automatically, can't remember what it's called. It has the WallE-looking robot "mascot". Luckily I have a tool that helps delete all associated files for any given app, but still.

look at those asshole devs defending their shit: https://forum.filezilla-project.…
Worse than Apple and North Korea together!

Wow, reading the forums...this doesn't look good, I rely heavily on it (I haven't installed on a new machine in a year, I think, so I am guessing it was before this mess?)
Why they couldn't just charge $10 is beyond me, I used to us WSFTP and paid something like $75 for it (and it sucked, but was reliable). I much prefer to use paid for software vs. free, just for things like this - no accountability.
Any other alternatives out there?
- on PC most stuff I've seen is shit. There is a browser-based version you can install on your server: www.pyd.iomekk
- i_monk0
They might not be able to charge money for it, because it's open source and may incorporate bits of software under license (GNU?) that rules out for-profit distribution.

I use Filezilla purely out of habit and its got about 200 websites FTP info stored in it I cannot be arsed to move elsewhere.
Never had malware issues.
Its simple but does the job.- The issue is the new installer, not the program itself. Unless you're installing it now, you won't have a problem.i_monk

I can't wrap my head around why someone would want to use this crap anyways. Especially on a Mac where you have options that are way better. Can someone explain to me why people use this app?
- ukit20
It seems weird but in my experience it actually is one of the "best" FTP clients for WIndows. You'd think someone would've come up have a decent FTP app that doesn't have a shit looking interface by now
- detritus0
My one major beef with FileZilla... which is something that's actually come in handy (and might to you, Fadein) is that it stores all of your FTP details in the clear, unencrypted.
Fucking handy when you lose all that data. Less so if you forget to wipe it when selling a computer, or worse, if it gets nicked.
I still use it, of course — but I'd be quite wary about having FZ on a mobile laptop...

So there's FireFTP if you use firefox, what other ftp software do you all recommend for Windows?

3D-FTP I've used and liked this in the past. But it hasn't been updated in a while and it costs money:

Anyone using the latest version? I just upgraded (reluctantly, but it kept popping saying "safety this, safety that" and in a moment to weakness clicked it), now none of my sites will connect.
"The data connection could not be established: ETIMEDOUT - Connection attempt timed out"
Their forum will not let you register with a Yahoo or Gmail email (WTF?!), but it looks like many have this problem.
Anyone else? Should I just dump them? I've been using them reliably for years, but this latest bs about installing extra software and now this makes me wonder if its time to move on.
