Was just trolling with the soccer post. I don’t even follow the sport and this England Colombia game was intense. Watched it at a local pub which had tons of fans from each side. Really great energy and the game was actually fun to watch!

I find it hard to share and transmit how we live this whole world cup thing here in Uruguay. I’m sure Salarrue kind of gets it, but it aint easy to entirely fit into a post how we feel it down here in the south of south america, specially being argentina’s little brother as regards ’fútbol’
Uruguay vs. France goes 11:00am local time in Uruguay on friday. Everyone at work already talking about an asado vs. “picada” (a vast selection of cheese, salami, chips, peanuts), vs. nothing, with or without beer, tv or projector.. If we fuck it up, it’s definitely going to be the most depressing friday afternoon ever. If we go through semis, shit’s gon get cray. I mean, there’s going to be a fat big party all over.
I remember back in South Africa 2010, when Uruguay beat Ghana, with the infamous Suarez’ goalie catch. I had never seen so many people celebrating on the streets. It had been more than 50 years since Uruguay had gotten into semis back in 2010. Only dads and grandpas were still talking about a glorious Uruguay until Forlan and that whole generation.
It’s a very special moment, and we take it VERY seriously. Its almost like nothing is happening until friday at 11am; everything seems paralyzed. Fútbol is extreme down here.
- Ok Uruguay is my team now.HijoDMaite
- @Hijo I feel that Mexico has some similarities with UY, but you guys have been getting into 8ths since 86! For us, Mexico’s been always bad-ass.maquito
- Thought you were more into Football (the Padres kind ;)maquito
- I saw a fist fight between a group of south american priests in 2010 watching the world cup in Argentina...Salarrue
- :)Salarrue
- I really like Uruguay since Forlan played for Olympique Marseille (I still despise Suarez since WC 2014). But France will be hard to beat.Longcopylover
- I'd really like Uruguay. But you know. Suarez.Hayzilla
- I am in France this Friday and will be very curious how the match goes. So far 3 people approached me about the desperate dropout of Germany.SimonFFM

Not felt stress like that from a sport in a long time. Happy to go out at this stage now, we did good enough for me. Would have been gutted to lose to those fluky, cheating Colombian bastards. ;-)
- why did they go with those old school dirty tactics? Especially with VARFax_Benson
- Agreed. All bonus now and in terms of expectations making the quarters is a result...still gonna get drawn i though. Colombia were filthy - Karma ruledbabaganush

I think last night mustve taken a few days off my life. Did England play up to the Columbian unfair play tactics? Possibly. Someone I know brought up the fact that domestic violence goes up when England lose. Could that be because partners don't have the same passion for the sport often saying "it's only a fucking game, get over it"

Surprisingly I actually found myself routing for England by the end of that match but simultaneously Clive Tyldesley made me want to join the IRA. I recon sports commentators contribute massively to the hatred of the English team up here and in Scotland, it was really hard to watch...
Really wish they would get some new blood in that booth... we have to watch that shit too... I guess at least it wasn't Lawrenson. 4 english lads in the ITV studio too, would have been nice to have a bit of objectivity, if not a colombian - someone regional UK?
- Ally McCoist has been really good on ITV but generally gets the minnow games with Jon Champion. Certainly wasn't going to get the England game, more's the pityFax_Benson
- lol at "if not a colombian". what do think this is, test match special? my experience of footy is the fervent patriotism,hans_glib
- hmmm join the IRA you say?Hayzilla
- and refusal to accept the other lot are any good ever.hans_glib
- sad to say.hans_glib
- My point is that the coverage is for NI, Scotland, Wales too... every other match other than England has both sides represented.kingsteven
- yes but that's because it doesn't matter.
i watched the highlights and the commentary was outrageously parochial. a colombian jammed his head into a tommy andhans_glib - tommy fell to the ground clutching his face, even tho no contact had been made with his face. no-one commented on that, instead kept calling out the colombian.hans_glib
- lol at "parochial"... i meant biasedhans_glib
- heh, it was daft indeed. Just pointing out that UK commentary is dominated by English and it does no favours for the general perception of English folks...kingsteven
- werdhans_glib
- but are we really judged by the quality (or lack thereof) of our footy commentators?hans_glib
- Well get good at something then ya useless Scottish cunts.Hayzilla
- Oh that's low... both Ireland and Northern Ireland are ranked way higher than Scotland :-Dkingsteven
- It's shite, would gladly watch the RTE coverage but it's blocked in the north... even if N.I. scraped in it would have been all England on ITV.kingsteven

My walk home last night coincided with extra time and, I think, penalties so it was at once the quietest walk back and the noisiest. The streets themselves were empty of cars and people, but every last pub and cafe or any place of public congregation with the blue glow of a television was thronged.
Every few moments the relative quiet was pierced by joyous or tortured exclamations that gradually bled into each other. By the end of my walk they were the same and I was hard-pushed to work out what the result was.
As a pseudo Scot who cares not a fudge for football, it was a lonely experience, but also quite a magical one.
I don't hope that England do badly*, but by fuck you cunts will be insufferable for decades if you win.

My personal pet theory, as mentioned beforehand, is that the machinations of world order will somehow conspire to make it an England vs. Russia final, with England edging a win, thereby cementing the virtue of Brexit and isolationism, whilst pushing a favourable Russian agenda but keeping them in their geopolitical place. Wit hall the Royal shit this year, Queenie and her Lizard chums are using all the soft power they can to maintain the illusion of relevance in our small isle.- I can't stand the Scottish thing of supporting Whoever- Isn't- England. I feel it's meant more poisonously than Scots would like to let on.detritus
- England are due to meet Russia in the semi final. France in the final. Most countries have a single sworn enemy. We have half the globe.Fax_Benson
- insufferable cunts, hahaMilan
- I think England will win and the feeling will be so alien and uncontrollable they will invade Poland.MrT
