wondering around these parts who may admit to being sober? (in lieu of traditional sunday morning "oh fuck i'm never drinking again posts.)
i'm about 10 months in to a planned 2 year break from booze. was hitting the bottle pretty hard (2-3 bottles of wine per day, 7 days a week for about 3 years straight, and that was just average) for a while there. figure i need some time to get the liver healthy.
all that being said. being drunk is cool on the internet, so i'm trying to see how those who don't drink react to the sort of weirdness that is online drinking culture.

sadness. sadness at the expectations the internet places on us.

Well not drunk, but moderate alcohol consumption climbs once you have kids. Coping mechanism :)

I drink every once in a while, mostly when hanging out with friends or during a family dinner. Been doing it once a week or even one time every two weeks for more than 12 years. Never had any trouble with my health nor my consciousness. With that being said, I think responsibility and willpower are able to cope, in the same way as with any other drug, with a healthy alcohol consumption.

- you are not drinking at those levels - why would you have any ill effects?fadein11

Alcohol is actually good for you in moderate doses vs not drinking at all. However the pressures of internet drinking culture will get to you after a while.

still don't get what internet drinking culture is. i've been bastardized for being sober at a bar seems like the same thing.

well, people who talk about being drunk on the internet in some sort of communal fashion is what i'd call an internet drinking culture. and there's a really fascinating sociological concept here about how it's inherently a mass of individuals alone being linked by a generally social behavior that is equally frowned upon (but more and more acceptable) to do alone.
so what i meant to sort of reference is this idea that the internet as a mechanism for the expression of being drunk is actually pretty apt - self-importance that is equally disposable - and just how strange/interesting it is to observe. but at the same time, it's almost a remote, unintended additional social pressure that those of us who can't drink need to adjust in a way to resist.

That's quite a lot of booze you were putting away!
My wife's pregnant so I'm having some time off, which is great because driving to restaurants in Brooklyn is quite awesome and it makes things way cheaper.
I have some weeks where I'll drink once, some where I'd drink five nights and not really notice it. Strange how it creeps up and after a heavy weekend, I'm really fancying a drink on a tuesday!
I do LOVE whiskey though so I can see both sides!

I've been a moderate to heavy drinker for more than half my life.
I've experimented with just about every drug I could get my hands on, was a chronic weed smoker for 10+ years, had a few hard drug habits that I weened myself off of.
My mom was an alcoholic, but has been sober for 20+ years, I had a half brother that died of heroin, another half brother that has been sober for 5 years after getting into some trouble with the law.
All this time I've been a totally functional somewhat successful adult. I've never been in trouble with the law and have always held down a job and relationships.
This month I gave sobriety a try. I haven't had any alcohol or drugs for 28 days. The drugs were easy but I really thought I had a dependency to alcohol. I could easily drink 6-9 beers a day and still function. I guess it wasn't that bad because I didn't have any detox problems at all. I've lost a few pounds and saved a ton of money. I'm starting to work out more and I feel great!
I'm thinking of sticking to it. If I can do a month, Maybe I can do two months.- nice work. Cooking a ton has kept me away from drinking much at all lately. A bit here and there, but not my normal routine. The money saved is amazing!capn_ron

- Drink lots of soda water. We had a few people over for the Super Bowl and I must have drank 8 La Croix to make up for the 8 beers I would have normally drank.fooler
