just wondering if any of you gents and lasses have used any of these sigma lenses?

the 50mm is apparently amazing! and has even been compared to the Carl Zeiss Otus

By all accounts, these A-series lenses are nothing short of terrific.

That said, I don't know about this whole dock business, seems incredibly fiddly. Also, I've not had good experiences with third-party lenses in general, my camera body having a fit and not recording the image.

I have the 18-35 for my t2i. Had to use the usb dock to get it to focus right. And not entirely sure i have it perfectly dialed in on the 35mm end. I blame my low end body... waiting for a 7d mark II

i am asking as i am getting a whole new kit, have used sigma before and don't have any issues with them, read stellar reviews for both the 35mm and the 50mm.

i love prime lenses and would likely get both and a 24-70mm. i already have a 70-200mm 2.8f sigma and its a beast!

I bought the 18-35mm f/1.8 for my Canon 70D, super sharp, great color, incredible build quality, gorgeous lens!

    then the problems started...

super heavy for my style of shooting, I walk around a LOT, street photography, reportage and landscapes mainly. it was also annoying to have such a giant barrel in length and girth for only a 18-35mm range you would think i was carrying a huge telephoto with the size of the lens. So it wasn't really stealth when it came to street photos.

Then the main issue. I had the hardest time shooting this lens wide open at 1.8 I mean very hard. To the point where I started to do some testing and I figured there was a front focus issuse or back focus I don't even know. Then I started to use the micro adjustment feature on my 70D to try and fix this problem and it didn't really work. I called Sigma about this and they pretty much told me it wasnt the lens and I could ship it to them and they would fix, calibrate, clean and do everything at no cost, great customer service. So I never found out what my issue was. Maybe it was just the fact that it's very hard to shoot hand held portraits at 1.8 and get tack sharp eyes. I don't know.

This got so annoying, plus the fact that I had to deal with the mother effin crop factor so this lens was actually only 28.8mm - 56mm
it just was not wide enough I was always left wanting a little more width in my shots.

So I said fuck it, I put bot the camera and the lens up for sale on craigslist.

Sold the 70D in two days for about 100 less then I paid for it.

The Sigma lens sat on craigslist for over a month. I paid $875 cash and had it as low as $675 with still no takers. It's really hard to recoup your money on third party lenses. The lens was in flawless shape and still no takers.

I finally decided I am going Full Frame canon and I will never look back.

I found somebody to trade the Sigma lens straight up for a new Canon 24-105mm f/4L and I bought a used Canon 5dmk2 with the money from the 70D.

I absolutely love it. Still a little heavy set up but now I have true 24-105mm "L" quality glass and weather sealed setup.

I will tell you that my bro-in-law bought the 35mm 1.4 Art Lens for his Nikon 7100 and he ended up taking it back too. He was expecting a nice little 35mm that he could walk around with and when it came it was also a tank super big and heavy.

p.s. I never shot video with it.

here are some shots I took with the 70d + 18-35mm combo:

Man the 35mm is awesome! Can't wait to get my mitts on the 50mm! Out of stock at the moment! Estimated to be with me in September! Hurry...

Not an art lens but I just ordered the Sigma 16mm 1.4
I have a panasonic 25mm 1.7 kit lens that I use mostly but the shorter focal length and larger aperture will be super handy.

I was curious about getting one for the Fuji, but they kind of seem like gimmic lenses that are better suited for dicking around and would be a liability in professional settings.

    • I was talking to a mate the other day and he said some of his friends had swapped out Canon lenses for Sigma ones on their shoots.PhanLo
    • I like the idea of a 1.4 and being able to get photos in low light. The Panasonic equivalent is nearly 3 times the price.
Will post some photos when it arrives.

    • Updates please!garbage
    • Will do! i think for me it will be a step up no matter what as I've only recently got a decent camera, but for a professional, it might be a drop in quality.PhanLo
    • they are great lenses. better in some cases. I rock canon and i find the 24-105 better canon version. the 70-200 is such a small difference vs canondeathboy
    • on the II vs sigma. at half cost. so worth it. Find a canon on wide zoom is still better with a the 16-35 f4. Never used the III 2.8 vs.deathboy
    • also have the sigam 50 1.4 double price fo canon 1.4. Worth every penny. Havent used the 1.2 canon but so very happy im not sure i care too.deathboy
    • You should post some photos Deathboy.PhanLo

Here's some photos on the Sigma 16mm 1.4, autofocus works as good as the native lenses and the minimum focal distance is about 8cm
