I need a new 1TB external HD. What brand should I get? What model for normal backing up?

I always hear folks saying WD drives fail, especially on here. I have three WD external drives, two of them are NAS drives. All of them I use strictly for backup, aside from my Time Capsule / Backblaze account. (The WD's were my backups before I got TC/Backblaze).
The two WD NAS drives are 7 years old and running just fine (yes, 7 years old). My other WD drive is around 5 years old and runs fine too.
- yep. that link above from backblaze states the same thing.sine

- had 3 of these fail in the last 2 months. picked up that WD from apple store abovedoesnotexist
- had the opposite experience. i think with hd's it comes down to luck half the time.inteliboy

Do those Lacie drives actually last and take a beating? if so will get one of them for my mobile drive.
- they do. i had issues with osx and firewire 800 — would always unmount and act weird. then died.doesnotexist
- Wait, so you're saying they are bad?sem

i really like my thunderbolt Gdrive (recommend USB3 if your machine has it- cheaper)

Apple recommended this one. Is it worth getting one that needs an outlet?

Make your own. Buy a case kit and swap the internals. I'm using SSDs now, all my SATAs are in a fire proof box in my closet.

big bulky WD harddrives that need to plugin to power are a thing of the past imo. Avoid the mess of cables and keep things small and thunderbolt.

I was looking at the lacie tough drives, but then I thought, why not get two of the WD ones for the same money and have one as a second backup? surely that's safer?
