Ripping of patterns are much more widespread in the clothing industry as it is in advertising or web design, they are trained to deal with this crap. Spires will not see a cent, he can be lucky when they don't sue him for defamation.

"I emailed them and I’m waiting to hear back."
Don't email Urban Outfitters. Email a Lawyer. Sue. Be ruthless. You deserve all of the money they made selling that skirt... and much more.

The design department always tries to be so edgy or fashiony, but then the clothing production department always goes and rips off cute etsy and tumblr work. No vision.

Same colors and texture, so yes it's an obvious rip.
But was it that hard to come up with their own or tweak it a little? The original work is nice, but hardly seems worth ripping off.

Not really, someone posted that image to a pintrest or instagram or any other site really and UO never knew who made it.Truth is, if UO is selling it, chances are they ripped it from someone, the actual question would be 'from who' not 'if' or 'how'

It does look similar, and Urban Outfitters does have a reputation of ripping off emerging artist and designers... Does the "Spires website" have Google Analytics or another IP tracking analytics that can trace if Urban Outfitters visted their website in the past year or so. That is how you can prove that Urban Outfitters ripped their work off.
