The Verge is excellent for this kind of stuff. I wouldn't say they really cover 'hard science'. Or at least they don't cover hard science in an in-depth way.
http://theverge.comI also quite like Tested's you tube channel. It's an offshoot of Mythbusters, features Jamie and Adam talking about interesting stuff. The other two guys Norm and Will cover a lot of technology stuff - they do pretty good reviews of products and stuff. Very centered on the maker community. Very accessible.

thanks. already on io9. hadn't heard of the The Verge, but it looks like it may have an enormous amount of junk content that Gizmodo has. I get my Godzilla news elsewhere and don't need to know about celebrity mom endorsements, etc.

I'll second Flipboard. I honestly get most of my news/info from there - business, trends, design, architecture, photography....really a pretty great collection of things from a variety of sources. Makes getting past the blah and seeing updated things easy.
- nothing like an esthetically pleasing filtered reality with a nice cup of coffeeyurimon
