Company plans to beam free Wi-fi to every person on Earth from space
- dbloc0
I assume it will be like free health care. If you want better service, you will have to pay for it.
- scarabin0
so this will make phone companies like AT&T obsolete since everyone can just skype each other for free?
what are their actual motivations? maybe full access to everyone on the planet? what do they get out of this?
- freedom.uan
- so they're doing it completely out of the goodness of their hearts, huhscarabin
- idk who is behind it...but I guess there are some humans with enough capital and hearts around....uan
- awesome, if true!scarabin

The Outernet team claim that only 60% of the world's population currently have access to the wealth of knowledge that can be found on the Internet.
This is because, despite a wide spread of Wi-FI devices across the globe, many countries are unable or unwilling to provide people with the infrastructure needed to access the web.

This will work, because launching tons of satellites is very, very cheap, and most New York companies like this can pull it off without much red tape at all. Internet will be free because fuel prices on launches are so affordable, and nobody will be using it to turn a profit.
- difficult to deliver sarcasm through a site postingdirtydesign
- Did you read the bit about them hoping to raise tens of millions of dollars to get the project on the road?chossy

Student science experiment finds plants won't grow near Wi-Fi router

I don't think their plan is very credible. Sounds like it's basically a handful of people who put out a press release, not something that's actually going to happen.
- but they're gonna test tech on the international space station, raise $ millions, and launch by next year!monospaced
- that's my sarcasm... I agree, it's really a moonshotmonospaced
- ukit20
But hey...they are taking donations if anyone wants to chip in

Bitrate reduces as you get further from a transmitter/receiver. WiMax taps out at 1Mbit/s around 50km. Low Earth Orbit satellites operate around 200-2000km from earth, so I'd imagine that the speed of this "outternet" would be incredibly slow when 7billion people are accessing it.

Fucking Daily Mail.
