Just a fun consensus.. how do you guys save different versions when designing something? I'm talking initial stages, where you're trying to come up with completely different looks and concepts.
Sometimes I save separate psd's, sometimes I just group everything and duplicate, sometimes I just turn layers on and off and only duplicate the ones that change... I've been asked for layer comps in the past, but that was just a nightmare of things needing to change slightly for each verison.
How do you do it?

I typically do separate files, versioned by date and version number. I don't necessary want my PSDs cluttered with old stuff that didn't make the cut, which would be the case if I only did a single grouped PSD.

multiple file versions until a direction is signed off on.
i use layer comps only for final files that need slight variations in text or promos or how a shot is cropped. they are incredibly useful.

layervault.com has completely changed my workflow

- $39 a month? that's pretty steep.
free version all work is public, so that won't work.lvl_13 - otherwise seems cool.lvl_13
- use it at work... probably more relevant to an agencyfourth

doesnotexist,
one file, no v2, v3, v4 etc, no multiple comps in one file. no hidden layers or groups
layervault keeps every save as a revision. if the client liked the one with rounded corners I just revert to that revision
- i suppose if you do the v1, v2 thing. i have one file per day, each file is dated.doesnotexist
- sounds incredibly redundant and annoying to have to find something olderdoesnotexist

You could also just use Git or SVN. They both have no problem with PSDs (or any file type) and are free.
