I've trained Krav Maga for 4 years now. Maybe give it another shot, it's one of the easiest to learn and most useful self-defense systems.

I've done karate for over 10 years... always a deeper level to go and movements you've already learnt can be used as something else entirely with small changes.
eg. Block, counter, turn can become block grab, turn and throw.
Whatever art you choose make sure you do it for a minimum of a year and give it everything at class. You need the movements to become muscle memory to work fast enough in a real life encounter.

If you want to defend yourself its going to get ruff god forbid anything happens that warrants you to fight. best styles are ruff and made for street fighting... you dont want to forshadow your moves with woosie dance moves you learned from a flowery style of fu Dung

If it's the idea of hurting someone that you find harsh you should probably try jiu jitsu. It gives you the option of putting someone in a lock or hold without hurting them, but that can also put you at a disadvantage if there's more than one person attacking. If you do get into a confrontation, it's pretty rare these days that it's going to be a one-on-one fight so Krav Maga is an excellent martial art to learn how to handle yourself in those situations. Regardless, getting into a physical confrontation is an experience that's unavoidably violent.
