Plane crash, painting over logo?

A plane just crashed at Bangkok's main airport and they immediately painted over all the logos and branding:
On one hand I can see the logic in doing this; a photograph is circulated a lot more than the written text of an article and a logo on a crashed plane is the stuff that sticks to the memory.
But overall to me it seems to have the opposite effect of what they're trying to actually achieve; they are now drawing more attention to their brand and making themselves seem to have unbalanced priorities.

Does anyone know if this is standard practice for all airlines around the world, some sort of brand protection policy, or is this something Thai Airways thought of themsleves?

it must be working,
I don't see no plane,

Pretty pointless really. Most reporters/journalists would find out which airline it was within minutes and then mention it in copy. Also, makes the airline look a little iffy.

That's a sleezy person who ordered it, but that's smart in case this get's tumblr'd or whatever.
Stores do it when they close a branch too. Brands never want bad pr. They're not denying anything.

Why didn't they go one step further and paint on the logo of a competitor?

Ah the plot thickens, it seems like its not really a Star Alliance official policy to cover the logos during a crisis:

Well now I'm never flying Thai Air, because their planes crash 100% of the time according to this photograph.
