What are you guys using on a Mac? I'm currently running an older copy of Suitcase and before I just go and upgrade I'm wondering if there are better options. FontExplorer looks good, any others?

i think any font management depends on your font types & OS - and what software you use... opentype is the way to go - but some old suitcasePS fonts will work - then they break - then all your fonts get corrupted because sometimes you'll be using bitmaps/opentype/truetype etc. then an update from a piece of software will put 20 more types into your font folder...
basically they're all shit - and will work one day but not the next.
or is that just me?

Font Book (for now). I keep hoping Adobe will get into this game.

FontExplorer X Pro — which was free for many years during the "dark" years of font management when Suitcase couldn't figure out how to get their software on OS X running decently (seriously, it was unusable). So with Font Explorer my employer saved thousands of dollars for a few years and actually got a better experience from a free product.
After the economics balanced out they charged for it, but it costs what any good font manager should and each update just gets faster and better. I've paid for every update ever since knowing that I got a few years of free usage and it is a good font manager.
And everyone knows they should be upgrading all their legacy PS1 of MM typefaces to OTF whenever possible, right? Those formats are long abandoned and the fact that modern versions of OSX or Windows still runs them at all is a very nice bonus. If not, your font problems are your own fault.

Dusting off this old thread to see what you guys think. I'm updating my CPUs at work and home to Mavericks, which makes now a good time to potentially switch up Font Managers. I'm currently using an ancient Font Explorer X, v1.2.3 (2008). So far I'm considering just paying to upgrade to the newest Font Explorer X Pro, or rolling with Font Book, (which is way cheaper and actually much more capable than i thought). Any recommendations? Any other worthwhile apps out there?
I got excited about ideaist's FontCase recommendation, but it went to app heaven in 2013 :'( http://bohemiancoding.tumblr.com…
