Are you talking about The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller?
The graphic novel written in 1986 and still number one in most lists?
A story that very heavily inspired Chrisopher Nolan's version of Batman, that didn't only safe Batman from being the laughable campy television character he was since the 60's but helped the whole medium of comic books to grow up and gain respect as a worthy artform that could tell serious stories?Yeah. Miller was really running out of ideas when he wrote that.
- I have it. Batman and Superman together is ridiculous.CygnusZero4
- And you'll keep whining about that all the way to the movie theatre, no doubt.Sep

I'll admit to anyone that I enjoyed BatmanvSuperman. It had the right balance of cheesiness and action that any decent superhero film should have.
Notes:
• Batman was a delusional psychotic.
• Emo-Superman is consistent with the comics from late 90s- 2000s era
• Lois Lane gets saved as she always does, ode to camp
• Lex's whole motivation was to prove he could control a God and he did it. Mastermind.- I haven't seen the film, but devious chess-playing Lex is always better than exo-armour wearing Lex.face_melter

"But if Supes isn't governed by an innate morality, the cornerstone of this character, then the only reason he hasn't thrown every bad guy on the planet into orbit is because he doesn't really care to solve that problem. . . . He's a whiny, truculent, occasionally homicidal child, and if that's not a better representation of the United States and what it believes in, then I stand chastened with knuckles rapped.""BVS is an unerring pastiche of who we are at this moment in time: scared, angry, violent, disjointed, poisoned by hiraeth (Batman keeps a Joker-defiled batsuit in a Plexiglas display case like a mad hobbyist), driven by emotion rather than logic, by ideologies rather than reason. It's polarized, xenophobic, hyper-sexualized, hyper-desensitized, and, in the final analysis, more than a little psychotic. BVS is the inmates running the studio. And it's going to make a billion dollars."
The only review I read that credits the movie with any merit at all, though watching it is a joy only for cynical, masochistic, existentialists looking for heroes in a post-9/11 world where everyone is a criminal.

DC...you fail. Kids don't wanna see this. Looks like a funeral. Kids and families WILL see avengers...multiple times.

The Dark Night Returns clearly had too subversive of a message for it to be adapted for mainstream US (or global) audiences.

Statue of Superman in the trailer looks like Michelangelo's David.
