An Australian restaurateur has invented - Ћ - a new letter of the alphabet to replace the word "the" because he thinks it is more efficient.

I read about this the other day, it seems he just wants to trademark a symbol that he's trying to force on the world... is it pronounced how its spelt - "teh" ?

“The word 'and’ is only the fifth-most used word in English and it has its own symbol – the ampersand,” said Mr Mathis. “Isn’t it time we accorded the same respect to 'the’?”
The ampersand predates English. It's a ligature of "et", which is "and" in Latin.

Looks like devanagri. Roman script languages are so alphabet based rather than syllable based. I'm down with change, but don't think it'll stick.

Weak all around for a few reasons:
1. Guy uses the ampersand as justification, yet how often do you replace "and" with an ampersand in the course of typesetting body copy? Ampersands seem to only show up in titles, headlines, proper names, and posters about ampersands.
2. What i_monk said about thorn. If you really want to rock out with your "th" out, then thorn it up OE style.
3. Saturn would like to have a word:
4. Reminds me of the nonsense the folks behind Curator's Code (http://www.curatorscode.org/) tried to push because they felt "via" and "h/t" were too laborious to type.
5. Better yet, reminds me of the Arthur's Head Screwdriver:
6. If we're going to indulge alphabetical efficiencies, for those of us who use the modern German alphabet, I'd rather eliminating the capital "I" in favor of a lowercase "i" for standalone use and the purpose of contractions move to the front of the line in widespread acceptance.
7. The alphabet needs another letter like the tech industry needs another pointless app.
