This isn't my main focus of work (identity) and law is probably the most cliche riddled sector there is.
They want a logo with an emblem of some description (not just type).
Where do you guys start with this?
I am sketching but keep just ending up with type treatments.
Its low budget so needs to be done quick (part of a website job). I know this isn't the way of doing things but its bread and butter.

What is the name of the company?
- hans_glib0
a monogram is the most obvious starting point
but...
what do they do? family/general practice/corporate?
what sort of company are they? slick/friendly/aggressive?
solicitors/barristers?
modern/traditional?the answers to these and similar questions should give you some direction

I rebranded a 'top 5' law firm a couple of years ago. They already had a heraldic symbol as they are a very old company. We did lots of redrawing until they were happy.
Aside from that it was all about typography and imagery.
Typographically, we gave them a typeface that could be used to set very detailed reports/contracts etc, but would also work at larger scales and feel ownable. We also avoided standard stock/corporate imagery.
Research the competitors and be different, but with good reasoning.

Its a name of the partner followed by solicitors.
They do everything from personal - commercial but focus is on individuals - probate, family, property etc.
Traditional but also want to look contemporary.
Friendly family firm who are established and do not want to alienate existing client base (currently do not have a logo! - just the name on letterheads).- smallish but part of a bigger group - logo does not have to reflect thatfadein11

Why not let the website design lead the logo design and see what it evolves into?
Got a good longterm law firm client that i've designed their current and past site. Their current site is VERY different to the norm of law sites. For the site we steered clear of stock shots and got them to commission photos and they were treated with a house style - giving even their images an identity.
They loved the styling of the website so much that within 6 months they had their identity looked at and all their print work was changed to match this new style.
Think of the bigger picture :)
- nice. thanks.
unfortunately they need the logo 1st for signage etc.fadein11 - is it all style or was there any brand strategy behind the website design?
foz - ugh for web driving logo designdoesnotexist

Be sure to include a gavel, a blindfolded lady, and a set of scales.

some things to bare in mind:
1. Law firms send out shit loads of letters, design something that is easy and cheap to print.
2. Squares. Lawyers love squares. draw a square, now next to in on the right write each of the three partners names stacked. make them take up the same height as the whole square. now customise the square somehow. now you are done.
3. wait! blue make it blue and grey. now you're done.
welcome to the world of identity design, you can now call yourself a pro and have a tommy over HFJ fonts.

I like briefs like this, and I've done a load of law firm stuff in the past.
In a way they're generally good clients, but who require a bit of a unique approach. Lawyers like to be listened to, but they also love a bit of flannel - persuasion and rhetoric are the name of their game :)

gavel! gavel! you cannot lose with a gavel!
ok, also corinthian columns! or, maybe a scale? (of justice!)
i had to do one once. i tried to do non-cliche but - too bad, lost to someone with columns

Thank you everyone.

Lawyers don't need a "logo" mark. Just go with something purely typographic.

I am showing a couple of variations of a mark and a couple purely typographical.
