So it begins...
"More than 100,000 apply for mission to colonize Mars in 2022; 40 picked will never return."

i feel like i've seen (or soon will see) this reality-themed horror/action movie:
the inhabitants as i see them:
dave chapelle (black comedic relief)
denis quaid (scientist seeking answers to looming end of world problem)
fat guy from sienfeld and jurassic park
eh, since we're going there, might as well add goldblum:
and the obligatory misfit punk rocker emo kid who's getting into trouble (but they're smart and that'll play into the story in some significant way later in the story!) - played by young kristen stewart:
the poor asian dude who doesn't make it five minutes into life on the new planet:

pretty nuts, but i'm sure they said the same thing about columbus and other early explorers. part of human nature, the rewards far outweigh the risks, and it's something that must be done sooner or later.

Won't it take them 187 years to get there? That's a long time with no room to stretch.
- Lol what? I think its somewhere between 1.5-3.CygnusZero4
- they just sent robots there don't you knowuuuuuu
- 187 years ago thoughuuuuuu
- it takes 8 months for the rovers to travel to Mars, and human trips would certainly be much fastermonospaced
- why would human trips be faster?uuuuuu
- uuuuuu0
so this is never going to happen and is mostly a big PR campaign by a aerospace company. the person would probably die from radiation on route. also, its pointless. robots could do waaay more than any human could do in these circumstances. A human, who will die, and is in an extreme environment under this sort of stress, like why do this to some one? To start a colony? one person?!?!?!?!? research? its a ridiculous concept.
- note this isn't NASA so there is no way its for purely scientific purposesuuuuuu
- like do they want to research how a person will die in space? send a monkey ffsuuuuuu
- could you ever get permission legally to kill a human for space research? private company or notuuuuuu
- I'm telling every single one of you right now this will not happen.uuuuuu
- also you would need like a super elite space astronaut with years of experience who is also willing to sacrifice him/herselfuuuuuu
- they are planning on hiring the best appilicant? how many super elite astronauts applied?uuuuuu
- just send a willing lab rat or do they actually have to do something ?uuuuuu
- it takes a load of training and expertise to spend even a few months on the space station.uuuuuu
- they want to send someone to die, so that could take years in a capsul in deep space. anyone would go fucking insaneuuuuuu
- ....insane. even super elite astronauts would be useless after a year, they would be suicidaluuuuuu
- but NO some priavte company wants to do this... obviously a very noble cause. pfftuuuuuu
- drinking there own piss and eating fucking stocked space food and probably your own processed shit.uuuuuu
- wtf does it take to keep a human alive for 5 years in space alone?! insaneuuuuuu
- what are you talking about, i'm sure it'll be exactly like firefly or something/_niko
- completely utterly ridiculous if you actually consider it. will NOT happenuuuuuu
- haha Fireflyuuuuuu
- uuuuuu0
I'd like to hear NASA's opinion of this project considering you would probably need a lot of support and cooperation from them and the international space industry.
how much oxygen do you need to last 5+ years in space? what about fresh water? they can't just blast off from earth with that much resources on board so they would have to spend months on the space station to stock a space capsule that would have to leave from there. so basically you would require the international space community to be fully cooperative and supportive of this private company. Is this company financing the entire pointless endeavor themselves?
I think the max anyone stays on the space station is 8-12 months tops. Drinking and processing your own urine constantly. no showers, cleaning yourself with napkins. is this person going to just stare out the window until they reach Mars? you would have to be capable of some extreme psychological conditioning to stay active and sane.
I am thinking about this too much but i can't because its so absurd.
- also the radiation would kill the person slowly and painfully. but i already said that.uuuuuu
- why the fuck would any company bother? accomplishes nothing, costs tens of billions.uuuuuu
- all valid points, but we have to do it sooner or later. This is a suicide mission, but maybe we'll learn something from them._niko
- actually we don't have to send people to mars. there is nothing necessary or immediate about it.uuuuuu
- so every sailor on a long trip went insane?scarabin
- boredom and difficulty are poor reasons not to pursue achievementscarabin
- its not bordom i'm talking about its staying fucking sane. astronauts go crazy. also you have to drink your own piss, not bathe and not eat real food ever.uuuuuu
- people jst freak out under the stress of no sleep or real nutrition and living in a closetuuuuuu
- thats why all astronauts under go extreme psychological training so they don't kill themselves. literally kill themselves or other astronauts.uuuuuu
- they live like kings compared to the folks who made your iphonescarabin
- but yeah, it would be no simple taskscarabin
- eficks0
the best comment i read was someone asked if they can sign *other* people up for it.
- scarabin0
it's not like we had anything to gain from going to the moon. at least this way it's not coming out of our taxes and we still get to see the shit
- uuuuuu0
if you are considering this as a real possibility you don't get it. its not going to happen because its impossible. you need a real deal elite astronaut to go on this sort of mission, and they will die before they even reach Mars. Also the landing is a long shot. Even the landing for the robot that NASA ( a real space agency) attempted and succeeded at was very iffy. So lets assume these people or this person actually survive the radiation and exceedingly dire environment they have to attempt to then enter the atmosphere and land. Lets presume this extreme feat of space aeronautics is attained then what do they do? live in the capsule some more until they're dead? they still have food/water/oxygen stock around? build a house? start a... LOL... colony? you guys comprehend what sort of logistics, resources, technology, funding and just plain fucking deadly odds this requires? NOt possible, NOt going to happen.

yea, i wonder why they ask about sense of humor
