I was thinking classics... even beethoven's 5th... Though the tunes that I actually keep going back to are things like Boards of Canada, Aphex, Brian Eno... maybe throw in some Flylo, Rustie, Hudmo etc mixes.
And I find myself more listening to soundtracks these days --- ambient darker stuff like Heat, Bladerunner, Akira, Black Rain, The Running Man etc... ah I love that stuff. Perhaps not essential, but they've got the most plays in my itunes.

this is all music that seems necessary if you're 40.

The Beatles - all right, but I haven't got their back catalogue and don't need it.
Classical - too broad a category, ergo useless as tits on a bull to include in any sort of must-have list. There's great classical, and there's utterly shit classical.
Michael Jackson - Never liked him at all, and I'm happy the cunt is finally dead and staying dead.
My personal must-have list is the entire Sisters of Mercy catalogue, all of Front Line Assembly prior to Millennium, just about all from Front 242's stuff, and select portions of Metallica's catalogue (KEA, RTL, MoP and AJFA. Don't bother me with anything else after that).
