Not much competition. Here is our mainstream alternatives to Google.
Yahoo, Bing, Ask...

I like the google ventures site...
Met a few people on their team which I liked as well. I find their side projects are much more creative, but definitely leaning more towards minimalism.

@albums
It's great to put down others to better position yourself. Unfortunately, that doesn't make you a better designer. Looking at your work, seems like you have little experience with major brands. Keep it real playa.

QBN forum is critiquing Google?
I'm fucking laughing out loud.

Watching that video, I don't agree with their approach to branding. Mainly for it's inconsistency and lack of vision. It's also dull, much like that video.

i_douche,
If you don't want Google to search for a term simply place a - in front of it. So append this to your query. -pets, -fastener
As mono said, modifiers.
I do love public displays of angry ignorance though so keep on trucking.

Maybe you want things to be "nearly psychic" and decide for you, but I don't.
Good day, douches.

I'm aware of this, ernexbcn, but I shouldn't have to tell it twice. It didn't use to assume (or take liberties) like this, and I just wish it would give me the option right up front to search only for exactly what I entered, in the tense/spelling/etc I used.
This is just a random (probably not the best) example:
dog/dogs or monkey/monkeys is almost understandable, but "pet"?, and returning "attached" or "fastened" instead of "fastening"?Boolean terms are fine, but I shouldn't need to know it'll look for "pet" or "attached" and have to exclude them when I search for "monkeys" or "fastening".
- You're example sucks because you don't know what you're searching for and are complaining about assistance.albums
- ummm, fastening = attaching, and dogs and monkeys are pets, I think Google did the best it fucking could POSSIBLEmonospaced
- also, have you not tried SEARCH MODIFIERS!?!?!?? dude, seriously, try putting it in quotes to startmonospaced

- I disagree, i_monk is the one spazzing to the point of screenshotting and highlighting text to make a pointmonospaced

@i_monk sometimes when you search for something even on english it assumes you were trying to search for something else, that is, trying to be so smart that it searches for something else assuming you misspelled something. When that happens you have to click on the link they provide under the search box that says "search for X instead".
The latest changes they made to the layout are a bit shit, before you had the options to alter the search results on the left visible all the time (past 24 hours, past week, past month, etc). Now they hid those under a button.
- don't you guys know anything about search modifiers?monospaced
- obviously not mono ha. surprising.fadein11
- yeah, read the fucking manual, I get youernexbcn

It may not be completely there yet but in the last year and a bit they have transformed the way they design - thats a fact.
