Just curious if anyone knows the going rate for a spot illustration in a major newspaper / publication.

no idea about bloomberg, i know a spot in the op ed of the new york times is us$400, in the u.k newspaperss are getting really tight with editorial stuff so you're looking at £50- £100. the newspaper articles turnaround time is quite tight a day or two where as if you doing something for the weekend supplement magazines you can get up to a week or even two and pay tends to be higher for those too.

Bump for more info. Does anyone know if mags/newspapers want you to submit multiple ideas, or is it one idea per rate.
How much would you charge for a couple spot illustrations for a magazine feature article?

In my experience, you're usually commissioned based on their story rather then you approaching with your ideas (magazines).
How much to charge? It depends on the size of the feature and their page rate. In the past I've commissioned and paid between £50 > £150 for one illustration (quarter page usage). For a multiple page feature anything between £400 > £2k (depending on illustrator).
Set-up meetings with picture editors, art editors/directors etc and talk it through

How many ideas depends on time frame.
Usually try one idea (sketch), if they like it, good, if not - have another idea.
Fee - Can vary a lot depending on publication obviously - New York Times may pay $600+ / Computer Arts Magazine around £150New York Times paid me $500 for a spot a few years ago. Art Director had seen some of my work and told me exactly what they wanted, so there was no sketch stage. Guardian (UK) have very quick turnarounds and want sketch ideas first.

You'd be better off sending in a portfolio or sample of your style, then you're on their radar when they need something.
