  How many ideas depends on time frame.
  Usually try one idea (sketch), if they like it, good, if not - have another idea.
  Fee - Can vary a lot depending on publication obviously - New York Times may pay $600+ / Computer Arts Magazine around £150

  New York Times paid me $500 for a spot a few years ago. Art Director had seen some of my work and told me exactly what they wanted, so there was no sketch stage. Guardian (UK) have very quick turnarounds and want sketch ideas first.
