When do you and when don't you use small caps?
Would you use them for the TH in December 17th?

NO ALL CAPS. MAKES READ BETTER AND MORE IMPORTANT.

I thought this was going to be an acceptable-headwear-for-romantic... evening advice thread.

Honestly.... I'm married now, but when I was dating, some women had small caps and some had large caps....

Small caps are only syntactically appropriate for acronyms – BC, AD, AIGA, etc., or for emphasis where italics aren't quite strong enough. Hierarchically and/or stylistically, they can be useful for subheads, running heads, or folios. Otherwise, they tend to be overused, particularly in our new Opentype age. Sometimes I see them mistakenly used for abbreviations or proper names like C.S. Lewis.
Using small caps implies full stops between characters. It's good simple practice to do without punctuation where understanding won't suffer. But if full stops are a must, don't use small caps.
Some typographers use small caps for acronyms that are assimilated into language such as TV or DVD, but prefer not to use them for things like state names.

In other words, don't use small caps for your date unless the entire line of type is in small caps (which might not be a good idea anyway).

What about AM / PM in a normal line of type? I never know if it is AM, am, or AM (small caps).

Like a lot of 'rules' as long as it doesn't impair the meaning or readability it doesn't really make a difference. Therefore, it depends on what best fits the style of the piece.

If you are going on a date and it is a sure thing then I would probably use a large cap, ok it might be a bit more uncomfortable than a small cap but it makes sure you won't get pregnant and you can still have some freaky fun.

Small caps usually don't date outside their case.
