What is Illustrator Selecting?

Does this happen to you?
Illustrator CS4 is saying I'm selecting a big object when I'm only selecting a small one.
Using the white arrow (A), I click on a shape that is not grouped and not masking anything either, and it gives me this huge area, with nothing else in it. I hit the V key and it gives me the image above.
The shape is 55 px wide, but it says at the top that it is 4131.183 px.
I can copy and paste this into a new document and it's normal. I can also close and reopen the document and it is fine.
Why?

it sometimes does this to me too. i'd love to know the answer. there is no pattern in when it chooses to do so.
running cs6

Zoom out to the max and be sure there are no stray points or objects outside your artboard. That's usually all it is when it happens to me.

I have had this as well a while ago. It is definitely not stray points.
As far as I remember it mostly happened with imported files from later Illustrator versions.

You may have a guide selected. That normally causes this issue!
- you can't select guides and objects at the same time. am i wrong??CanHasQBN
- You can select both. You're wrong.monospaced
- oh, i've always had my guides locked (by default i guess). thanks.CanHasQBN
- It's InDesign where you can only select one or the other.monospaced

If it's from new Illy versions it could be the artboards?
- Do a Shift+Ctrl+Y and see what it's selecting.orrinward2
- Or just Ctrl+Y rather!orrinward2

Left over bounding box or clipping mask from an imported graphic?

Illy has done this randomly since pre-CS days. If closing/reopening doesn't work, shutting it down and restarting the program will.

This glitch has happened for many years and many versions. It's random. Just use your white arrow and select the points of the offending object. Sometimes it's a random object on your page. It's kinda like shaking and hitting an old tv with a glitchy picture. Don't know why but it happens and that works for some reason.

Happens all the time!
Lock the object (Apple + 2) then unlock all (Apple + Alt + 2) seems to solve the issue!

i hate that bastard. happens all the time. Its not a stray point cos when you use a different tool like scale it doesn't recognise the larger object.
stupid.

Just a weird bug that's been around forever. Double-clicking on the object to Isolate it and then clicking back out will usually fix this as well. Another fix is to try hiding and unhiding the object.

Illustrator pisses me off so much.
It's the annoying uncle that visits at Xmas, wants everything his way

delete the selection?

restart 3 times.

you don't have to do any of this.
select all, then deselect. fixed.
- wish it were true, but this is rarely the case in my experiencemonospaced
