Im working with a designer who thinks very highly of his skills.
he keeps bouncing out statements like 'pixel perfect' and 'crispy' to describe his work... hes traditionally from a print background and is employed as a digital esigner mainly for web and mobile.
my problem is his work is very average... the finish is great... but the overall design is amateurish.
how do i broach this with him and get the best out of him?
i think its down to experience... he needs more practice in building web design however he often falls back on a formula for his design work... gradient fill, dropshadow, textured backgrounds etc...
he reads all the design blogs and picks out some great works as inspiration but seems unable to produce work to the same level
all help appreciated.

Why not just say this part to him:
he needs more practice in building web design however he often falls back on a formula for his design work... gradient fill, dropshadow, textured backgrounds etc...
And ask for different concepts at the outset.
His work may very well be 'pixel perfect' but if the pixels look shite to being with, give him a nudge in the right direction.

He says "pixel perfect" and "crispy" and you accuse him of thinking he's TOO good? At most it sounds like he's really into his role and is trying to do good work. At worst he might think he's good (you guys did hire him so you're to blame), but no way he thinks he's TOO good or else he'd just leave. Mind your own business, let him make his mistakes and encourage what you want.
- yeah trooperbill, mind your own business. that's what reall CD's do. They ignore their staff.bumdrizzle
- you might want to re-read his post by the way mono.bumdrizzle

- sounds like he's just not a fan of his style and the things he saysmonospaced

Send a group-wide memo reminding everyone that pixel-perfection and crispiness are now residual properties. Urge everyone to adopt the new random-pixel, fuzzy aesthetic that all the hip agencies are turning to.

Are you sure you are not the problem?
- qTime0
There is no problem here apart from you feel threatened by him perhaps?
- according to bumdrizzle, trooperbill is his Creative Directormonospaced

start by inviting him into your office for a chat..
and once he sits down.. fart..there will be an awkward silence.. at which point you bring up the state of his work..
before he can respond, get up and say you will be right back.. then go to a long lunch
he will get the message
- monospaced0
trooperbill, are you his boss?
- kind of... we dont have that kind of heirarchy however im responsible for the quality of output as im infront of the clienttrooperbill
