To impress your/the ladies. (or to just enjoy yourself, who cares if it's not that manly.)
Espresso + Baileys + splash of Sambuca. Shaken over ice. Strained into a chilled martini glass.- < right on; bitches love this.antagonlsta

find out what alcohol you like. i like gin and vodka but do NOT like whiskey and most tea colored alcohols. then just experiment based on cocktail selection of the bar. since you know your alcohol just look up the ingredients of the drink and if it starts with what you like go from there.

whatever you do, don't order a mojito.

I usually go for a whiskey sour, but only if they have top shelf whiskey and fresh juice.
Martini - Aviator Gin, stirred slowly with lemon.

If you can get gins like Junipero, St George's Terroir, or Old Raj, get a dry martini. Up, with a twist of lemon. On of the greatest cocktails. Just depends on the gin.
For mixed cocktails, it's hard to beat a Tom Collins or Julep as long as they don't use too much simple syrup.
Also, for some old-timey goodness, try a Martinez (precursor to a gin martini, using Genever instead of gin) or a Death in the Gulf Stream: http://talesblog.com/2008/06/23/…

Whatever you end up drinking, remember to keep it in check. Your night can quickly be ruined by slugging down too many of whatever, and then you become "that guy". We've all been there.

Just try things. Eventually you'll narrow down the things you like, don't make you feel like crap the next day. It's a years long process. Enjoy the hell out of it :)

If you like olives, dirty martinis are the best.
I'm getting into single malt scotches. Delicious, if you like the taste of burning wood.
- Wood? That's peat, son. If you can't handle it, go for the lowland stuff.ETM
- I know, but that's what a ladyfriend said it tastes like, hahFrosty_spl
- Are we still talking about the scotch??ETM

Whatever you drink, you'll look manly if you stay in control. Don't drink fernet, that's for posers.

"...you won't have to listen to some snob proclaim that you shouldn't dilute your whisky with ice"
I'm not a snob by no means but I am always perplexed by people who order the finest of whisky only to have it diluted with coke, water, whatnot.
Don't get me wrong: have whisky precisely the way you want it.
But what is the point in ordering something so very specific if you're mixing it to taste different anyways?
Why spring for X and Y whisky that spent Z and ZZ years in a barrel, then proceed to whisk around some varying amount of coke and ice in that thing.
Do you put ice in your finer wines too?
You can, if you like. Of course.
It just seem unfitting to me. Perhaps I am a snob.So anyways, OP, the fun part of drinks is that you'll have a great number of times to find out yourself what you like.
Have them all.Since you're on qbn, and possible interested in design, why not buy a few random bottles of the juice with labels and packaging from Stranger & Stranger? Found in neat lickerstores.
http://www.strangerandstranger.c…- dude, we were talking about Johnnie Black. Not some $100 finger of single malt.randommail
- Sorry, didn't mean to Single (malt, eh) you out. Specially not for JW. It's just a common line, the water/ice/coke one.Peter

gin and tonic. I'd stick with that.
