The Reuters post is really interesting and sums up why I haven't jumped aboard Kickstarter yet.
He mentions this product that they also put on Kickstarter (and haven't delivered)...

Curiously enough I pledged for a product that was funded: http://www.kickstarter.com/proje…
It's been 4 1/2 months out and still the product hasn't been delivered. While I kept my expectations realistic (I didn't think the product would come until late summer) I was surprised at a few manufacturing hiccups that have occurred - very specific problems in regards to injection molding. And while the creators have been very good about explaining the nature of the delays I can't help but get a little nervous that $60 or whatever I pledged might evaporate into the ether if the product cannot be produced... or worse yet.. my $60 went to a product where the quality is far less than I expected. Still, I remain optimistic.

Very cool, the coloured LED thing interests me not but every thing else makes this seem like a winner. If they can get the price per unit down, it could easily be taken up en masse. If were to replace every lightbulb in my apartment I'd have to do the $735 dollar pledge making it somewhat expensive, but it would still be cool to do in say in our living/dining/kitchen which is where controlling the lighting this way would be novel (and handy).

@tOki,
This product is easily 2-3 years from going to market, if ever. The complexities of producing a reliable LED light bulb that produces 'white' light alone are not to be taken lightly. Factor in additional tech for the colorshift, dimming, and wi-fi functionalities AND trying to keep it in line with government regulations... well, good luck.

this bulb is bullshit.
p.s. my disclosure is that I'm working on a LED manufacturing project with Philps

Kickstarters that look to good to be true usually are. Fools and their money, amiright?
Also, my first thought when looking at this was "huh, that looks exactly like that Philips bulb."

yeah i do wonder about these projects which are reinventing the wheel significantly.. especially when you are talking half a million dollars.. seems like a easy way to move to a small island..

I find a big problem with a lot of crowed funding at this point in time is not enough people are thinking about it like financing an idea, with all the associated risks and potential bonuses. Too many think about it like they are just buying something or selling a product when more often then not the product hasn't even been made yet. Contributors and business people should look at it strictly as a financing opportunity not a retail exchange.

I'd like to make a Kickstarter to get VC funding to start a VC company. The making of would also be made into a documentary.

Could I get a Kickstarter going to create a new competitor to Kickstarter?
- mg330
Anyone see this yet?

So I was just saying above that the problem with a lot of these campaigns is that they are treating it too much like a retail exchange not a financing and development opportunity. I am glad to see that Kickstarter thinks so too...

They just made a bunch of changes and additions to ensure people don't keep making this mistake. Things like product renderings and simulations won't be allowed, you have to show the product in its current phase of development.
Also 'risks and challenges' will have to be explained. Meant to inform people about the development process and provide some transparency, which is an important aspect of any investment.
In time I think both the fundraisers and contributors will learn to be more realistic and savvy about it. Ultimately people will become more engaged in the process rather than making a payment then sitting back waiting for something in the mail.

one of the first things I thought of when I read this was the ouya, I don't think they would of been able to show the box or the controller if this was in effect. They still would of succeeded but I doubt they would of raised so much, at least they would of introduced people to the idea.
- I was wondering what you guys think of the no renderings or simulations change from a design and dev. perspective.lodef
- not sure what it would mean for these smart light bulbs.lodef
- Well I think the renders area good idea, if only to give an idea of what it will/could look likeian
- But they should be explained as such, and not presented as if they are the actual product.ian

Holly shit. How do you get that money transferred over from Kickstarter? They just shift a couple million dollars to your account?
- I'm sure that you'd have a chat to your bank first loltOki

I have one that uses a little IR remote to change colors/effects/etc, the bulb gives me a headache. :(
maybe its because it is just a cheap chinese version
