So the company I worked for is now a brand new company, new name, but same clients, most of same employees. Very long story but we've left the parent company we worked for and are now a smaller business, private company, etc. in control of our own culture, future, success, etc. Moved to a new office space we're trying to make our own.
Lots of ideas floating around for cool things to have in the office. Anyone have any cool affordable things in their own offices? I'd love to get people together to buy an arcade game of some kind. We're talking about putting in a small distillery to brew our own moonshine but that will take some planning.
What are some cool and affordable things we might look into to spruce this place up?

Cool office things are cool for the first day or two then go untouched forever. Upgrade your RAM... party!

Kegerators can be installed for as little as a few thousand. As an architect, feel free to e-mail me. I can try to assist you with specific drawings or sketches.
- We've talked about this actually.mg33

Act like an adult and avoid a foosball table/nerf guns/arcade console. People bring their own stuff anyway. Spend the money on some good desks and whiteboard walls. If anything, find a way to automate music in the office based on peoples tastes and playlists. That way it's democratic and not quiet as fuck in the office.

cannonball - I've been thinking about a way to do something with music like that.

We might have someone bring in their Wii; can make accounts for everyone, and the tennis and bowling games are stupid easy to play, and quick to play.

Maybe I'm just cynical, but a pinball machine or pingpong table always feels more like the thing that takes the least effort to show your are trying to improve morale, instead of actually getting to the heart of your shitty office culture. I've been in a few places that had them, and they hardly ever got used. Clients thought they were "really cool" though.
If I was setting out to make a great office, I'd focus more on making the work fulfilling and enjoyable, rather than trying to add some "fun" distractions... think about ways you can get people inspired and to learn and expand as professionals... Field trips, conferences/training, 20% time for passion projects, especially team-based, etc.
Beyond that: good chairs, cheap but large desks. Good sound isolation. Send people home at 5:00pm.
If you're starting fresh, might as well mix up some of the old culture with new ideas.
- quality chairs with lumbar support and good lighting that doesn't strain your eyes will always trump ping pong, foosball, video games, free sodas, etc.randommail

we had a bunch of game stuff around; foosball table, this thing you throw footballs at and it give you points, etc but i always felt like a slacker using any of it and felt like i was gonna get browbeaten or something.
we also did the beers @ 5 thing but i'd have coworkers who wouldn't partake and gave me guilt trips for it, like i was a bad employee or something.
i also felt like company trips outside of work hours were a waste of my personal time as you had to show up or you weren't a team player. and i always had other shit to do.
i've started thinking the best thing you can do is just have healthy relationships with your group members, avoid all the stupid gossip shit, give them time to work on their projects and let them be creative instead of breathing down their necks
