Maybe I'm just cynical, but a pinball machine or pingpong table always feels more like the thing that takes the least effort to show your are trying to improve morale, instead of actually getting to the heart of your shitty office culture. I've been in a few places that had them, and they hardly ever got used. Clients thought they were "really cool" though.
If I was setting out to make a great office, I'd focus more on making the work fulfilling and enjoyable, rather than trying to add some "fun" distractions... think about ways you can get people inspired and to learn and expand as professionals... Field trips, conferences/training, 20% time for passion projects, especially team-based, etc.
Beyond that: good chairs, cheap but large desks. Good sound isolation. Send people home at 5:00pm.
If you're starting fresh, might as well mix up some of the old culture with new ideas.
- quality chairs with lumbar support and good lighting that doesn't strain your eyes will always trump ping pong, foosball, video games, free sodas, etc.randommail
