Let's say I want to launch an online store today, say on Etsy or Big Cartel. We'll pretend I'm going to sell photos or digital designs printed on canvas and mounted, and that the printer will ship directly to the customer.

I know I can just go ahead and launch a store on either of those sites, but if I'm looking to make some money off of this, what exactly do I need to do to be legit? Business license? Seller's permit? I know I'll need to take some sales tax, but how do I find out when these taxes need to be paid?

I know I'm on the right track of finding info out, but no one source seems to know all of the answers. If it helps, I'm in Los Angeles (Studio City area). If anyone has done the same thing, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

    Thanks people of QBN.

Im in canada so im sure shit is slightly different. But unless you're making mega $ (like $30,000+ in canada) you don't have to charge sales tax on shit. That being said technically even if you sell one piece for $10, you 'legally' have to report it as income, but you dont have to be registered as a corporation or even a sole proprietor business to do it, just report it as additional income on your personal tax return.

If you want it to be operated like a business, then just hit up your business license place in town, as local businesses are basically licensed on a municipal level. IE you must be following the local business bylaws. Obama dont care about shit as long as youre paying taxes on the money you earn. (so that being said, make sure you're tracking all your expenses so you can tell that asshole to go fuck himself).

    • Yeh right. If you don't do what he wants he pulls his Gas Price lever, to make the prices go up. He'll get his, don't you worry.mikotondria3
